Waterproof mattress like the NHS have?

My mother is incontinent some of the time & really needs a new & waterproof mattress, a soft one like the NHS have as shes a bit immobile & quite light?

Anyone know where they sell these?

Looked on ebay, but I can't find similar to the NHS ones.

Thank you.

I've not tried these mattresses, but have used Sheridan fabrics for curtains etc in our care home. A reputable company, but not cheap.

    or there's these ones - http://www.furniture247.co.uk/ishop/3/shopscr40.html?gclid=CMuZncme6ZYCFQuY1QodrhdNOw

If you google nhs waterproof mattress, a few things come up. Does she need a waterproof mattress, or could you get away with a mattress protector - you can get some that are more secure that the normal ones in shops.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Thank you, just what I was after.

She needs a new mattress anyway, if I go her a normal one & a sheet she might just remove it (absentmindedly) & ruin this one.
  • Most towns now have a shop which sells equipment/aids for the disabled. Look in your local phone book or Yellow Pages.

Our local Dunelm Mill sells various waterproof mattress covers. Quilted or terry covered, but with waterproof linings.

just try googling 'waterproof mattress'. You should get more results than adding the nhs.

Make sure you get one that is breathable, as the other ones can be very plasticy.

Don't mean to sound stupid but if it water/urineproof then wouldn't it have to be plastic & if it can breath then it wouldn't be water/urineproof?

The NHS ones are quite soft & don't seem like they are made for children, IYKWIM:o

No. There are fabrics that contain a gortex type material. I don't know it works exactly, but it isn't plasticy, and it is waterproof whilst being breathable. I'm a fireman and it is used in our tunics and leggings, and believe me it does work.

I bet thats the stuff them NHS ones are made of, because they must be urine proof & yet they don't feel PVC plasticky.

    Thanks Tim:beer:

If you phone your local Incontinence Service they'll be able to give advice and tell you who the local stockists are.
Your local Primary Care Trust or Social Services will have the phone number.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Don't just go with the companies that they tell you about because many companies who specialise in specialist items charge much higher prices bed retialers who could sell you the same products. So shop around.
