:( I didn't mean to cause offence... I agree completely that everyone should find their own way... I just was relieved that I wasn't the only one that felt a bit lost with the Ford way - I really admire those that can make it work. I'm not here to 'bash' anybody :(

I do find it amazing that everytime someone on here recommends Gina Ford as a good parenting book to read, there are always people who succeed in insulting us Fordies.

PS: I haven't read this book, but a friend is raving about it. Apparently it's a relaxed version of Gina.

This book is by Ezzo, I've read it and it makes GF look relaxed! This is a truely scary book. I read bits of it when pregnant with my second child who is 5 (I couldn't continue reading it as some of the ideas made me feel sick). At one point it was sold as a Christian parenting book, but the Church dropped all connections with the Ezzos a few years ago after concerns about this book. It is very strict and is not just routines, it is a whole lifestyle. I guess the idea is to nip bad behavior in the bud and uses, for example, slapping a baby's hand in his highchair if he plays with his food. We're talking 6 months olds here, bytheway. None of the book is based in evidence and much of it is the opposite of research.

Hope the link works. If you google on Ezzo and baby you will find lots of stuff, most of it negative.

  • I'm another Gina Ford fan :)!

Can't recommend it highly enough. I think if I'm honest sometimes it may seem like harder work to do things the 'gina' way but in the end you'll not look back !! My first 2 children slept through at 10 and 12 weeks. I am expecting my 3rd child and we'll be doing it all again :-) with pleasure!!

Everyone comments on Gina mums being regimented etc. I don't feel one bit like that, infact quite the opposite! The other common comment I get is "You are so lucky, they are so contented !" I don't feel like I am lucky necessarily more that I put in ALOT of hard work and effort in the early days and now it's paying dividends (for me and my children). I think maybe some folks give up on Gina to easily and don't ever reap the benefits (some blame her methods and claim it just does not work). It's a bit like giving up on a diet in the 1st month or 2 , it will never work if you don't stick to it they all work if you put the effort in :rotfl:.

I think it either suits you or it doesn't but for our family it was a god send and I've no idea how we'd have coped without it. I know everyone raves about mothers intuition but for me this was a way of fine tuning my own instincts.

We have a happier and more contented household because of Gina Ford all round adults included like someone else already said most of it is common sense.

I hope you find a book that suit *you* and your way of life S@sha.

Debt free HOORAY !:T :A Years from now it won't matter what kind of car we drove, what kind of house we lived in, how much money we had in the bank, nor what our clothes looked like but the world may be a little better because, we were important in the lives of our children.

You'll find a whole load of negative stuff on the web on any parenting book. I could write pages myself on Miriam Stoppard, but I choose not to as I know others find it useful and suited to their way of living.

    My friend found it helpful.

S@sha, it may be your godsend/your nightmare, but it's one to consider as it has been helpful to others.

I loved Gina Ford with dd1, she settled really well on the routine, which I didnt start until she was about 16 weeks old, and then only because I wanted some guidance on what to do to ensure that she had the best start. Miriam Stoppard for me was a no go, I like routine you see.

With DD2 it was more difficult (they were 16 months apart), so we used Tracy Hogg with her, and that seemed to work well too.

Toddler Taming by Dr Christopher Green is an excellent no nonsense all rounder. He has a straight forward manner which makes sense without berating you as a parent.

I think you really need to look at what it is you want to gain, are you looking at what the milestones are? or do you want parenting assistance?, otherwise youl be like me with shelves full of parenting books, most of which were not my cup of tea!!

Anyway, HTH, good luck with ur pg (I am due with no 3 on 27th April).
Believe it or not, your instincts really are the best there is, but sometimes we just need someone else to say its ok.

    Love Ali
