I think I'll probably go with a self select S&S isa now.
At least if I lose out I will only have myself to blame.

You've made step number one - taking responsibility for your own investments. Now before you get swept up in doing it, step number 2 is to start learning about how share investing works, how to create a balanced portfolio etc etc.
Don't jump right in and start gambling on stocks. You'll lose lots, if not everything.Mmmm, credit crunch. Tasty.0
