Transferred money to wrong account

Options
Hi All,

Need advice and help desperately. Recently joined Alliance and Leicester current account, missed cut off for getting salary paid into account and had to transfer myself. This was 15th September and money still not arrived into account from LLoyds TSb. Checked detaails and realised I had misstyped the account number.

After numerous calls to Alliamce and Leicester they tell me that they know where the money but if the person does not want to give it back then they don't have to. Obviously this is a whole months salary and not what I can afford to lose. I have logged it as a complaint but I am finding A&L to be incredibly difficult in a number of ways.

The customer services staff are not informed about what to do in this situation and give incorrect advice. They are also not allowed to put me through to the department who is dealing with this.

Can anybody advise, I am desperate now.

Thats A&L for you. Keep up with the complaint. The person who recieved the money has to give it back as the money isn't rightfully theirs.

Unfortunately banks are crap in this area, if the bank had made a mistake and gave money to wrong person they would take it all back at once! However if its another customer, oh no, weeks and weeks of complaining.

Not sure how to go about it though! Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Absolute horsesh*t of the highest order - there can be and have been cases where mistakenly transferred money has been taken back out without the account holder's consent. Get onto Lloyds TSB and say that A&L have been uncooperative, and ask if they can recall the payment.

I agree they can LLoyds should recall the money, at work sometimes we get receipts that were not meant for us and they always get taken back.

What bad luck that someone actually had the account number you typed in usually when a typo happens it goes into the Banks Sundry account waiting for some one to claim it or is pinged straight back to the sender.

Make a formal complaint to the Managing Director of Alliance & Leicester - you can find his details by googling him - friend of mine had a BT complaint she emailed the MD and got it sorted in 20 minutes after weeks with the Customer Services staff.
  • Thanks for the support, Lloyds were helpfu;l and the ones who helped iron out where the action should be taken from in the first place.

I will call them tomorrow. I'll keep you updated.
  • After all this does OP really want to leave LTSB for Alliance & Leicester??

People wonder why I always say 8% of interest on your current isn't worth going to A&L for. Now I can just point to this thread and go "pretty much this". ;)

Hi it just took A+L 10 days to send my payment back to Lloyds and not 3 days plus 4 phone calls they said sorry and we will credit you with extra interest but never got it, i removed all my accounts from them after talking to 3 idiots on the phone that told lies that the payment had left my account thats when they picked the phone up.
  • Sounds like A&L are messing you around.

However, what concerns me is that you made this transfer on the 15th Sept. How long was it until you realised that something was not right as it hadn't been credited to your new account!?
  • Hi - came across this thread by chance and am experiencing a similar situation.
On the 5th August I attempted to make a £500 online bank transfer from my HSBC current account into my Alliance & Leicester current account but I made an error and the money was paid into an A&L Business Visa account !! I have spent 3 months trying to get the money back. HSBC traced the money and told me I would have to get A&L to request it's return, A&L tell me it is HSBCs responsibility to request it, I was constantly being referred back and forth between the banks, eventually I made a complaint to the banking ombudsman but they are still looking into the matter. My latest effort is to write directly to MBNA ( who deal with A&L visa accounts) to request the money back myself. All the while my £500 is sitting in someones account possibly gaining interest for them whilst I'm desperately searching for funds to keep my accounts afloat. Neither bank appear remotely interested in my plight.

  • I noticed 3 days later and contatced them immediately but was given the wrong information and 3 times by the customer services staff and it wasn't until Lloyds became involved that I was given the correct advice, they then have a 15 day time san which the person credited with the money has to respond and by the time they sorted ut the action they were required to take this was 24th October.

Batty, did you do they same thing and who did you speak to? This is £1700 and I am in serious trouble financially beacuse of it.

The bank have now said I will have to stand the loss and I asked who the customer is so I can try to get the money back via the Civil route but they will not give it to me.
