As far as I can tell from the system at work used to look up these services the service ID (ie the 7000XXXX) number identifies the service provider (MBlox, Jamster etc) but many different shortcodes can be used for the same service provider ie you could be subscribed to 2 similar chat services from the one service provider - so this would be only one 7000XXXX number, but two different five digit shortcodes. Networks show only the service provider on your bill as this is who has actually been taking the money - the shortcodes only show the particular service you signed up to.

But I have to say, personally, I can totally understand the point that networks should show the shortcodes if this is the only way customers have of identifying the service, other than calling the network.
I accept no liability if you chose to rely on my advice.
  • I have complained to Phonepayplus since this initial post, I hope they can do something about this as I am now £125 shorter as t-mobile has forced me to pay the bill
  • Just to clear up one piece of mis-information on this thread. It's not the 'service providers' (MBlox, Jamster etc) who are taking money from your accounts. The only company that has access to your account is your phone company.
T-mobile and the other Network Operators debit your accounts and pocket up to 50% of the pickings before passing the rest on to the service providers.

Yes the service providers are the ones involved in sending the unsolicited premium rate content (crap) but it's the Network Operators who are billing on their behalf.

The Network Operators, their premium rate partners and regulators all want taking out back and horsewhipped.

Is there a way of blocking such texts?could for instance t-mobile block them going to your account if you ask them to?

Yes t-mobile can put a bar on your account, it can take up to 24hrs but it will stop all 3rd party messaging being possible from your phone. CS are open until 10pm tonight so call them. or if your signed up on my t-mbile you can stop it through 'my options' I think it is.

cheers jess but can they stop them being sent to your phone as seems to have happened with the OP

  • you go into price plan and then services you can add. Then add charge to account bar. Although they don't have the premium sms bar on there so an e-mail to them wouldn't hurt :)
