HMM it depends on the vehicle as the company who owns it may want to go through insurance or they may be ok about getting one from a salvage yard
tbh without details of the car/van i cant really give an estimate of the cost but estimate around £30 ish if one is found in the scrappy

i never once suggested telling them to get one from the scrappy read my post they MAY be ok about it if it was a mint one

Surprised no ones mentioned that ideally when driving past parked vehicles, you should leave enough space for opening doors, and/or travel at such a speed that you are able to stop should a door open. So while opening a door in this manner isn't the best of ideas, the van driver should take some responsibility. Will it be a child running in front of the van next time and will he be able to stop?

Great in an ideal world but not very realistic. If you're driving along even at 10mph and someone opens a door a second before you pass a car then you've no chance. Also most roads aren't wide enough to leave the full length of a door between you and parked cars.

This is well and truly the OPs responsibility (as they freely admit).

The same goes if a child runs out in front of you, if s/he runs between two cars just as you're passing then there is nothing you can do.
