Did something sooo silly..

Hi all,

Today I opened my car door into the path of a van and it put a hole in his wing mirror! The top of my car door just clipped it.

He was ok about it as it wasn't his vehicle, but he said the company that owns it will give me a call.

It was one of those vehicles that is the size of a transit van, but is more like a people carrier....to and from the airport kind of thing.

Would anyone have any idea how much a new wing mirror would cost on one of those?? It was silver. The mirrow didn't break, it was just the back plastic part..

I am so worried because I am on track to have a really good month money wise and I was going to pay off a good whack of the credit card :(

Thanks.

HMM it depends on the vehicle as the company who owns it may want to go through insurance or they may be ok about getting one from a salvage yard
tbh without details of the car/van i cant really give an estimate of the cost but estimate around £30 ish if one is found in the scrappy

    Thanks for your reply..

I REALLY hope they dont want to go through the insurance. I have just got to 3 years no claims, it would be a disaster if that heppened over something so daft. I know its lucky it wasn't worse.

I guess I'll just have to give them a call tomorrow and see what happens! :(

To buy a new one from the dealers and have it painted to match the colour if it was, you're looking around £300.

Probably best just to offer to pay. But find out the male, model etc and price it up yourself as well but I concur with Conor probably around £300 maybe a shade more.

If you are really lucky it wasn't colour coordinated?

    Thanks everyone..

It was actually just plastic and not metallic, like a Matte silver colour. It wasn't like on a car where it was made from metal and sprayed the same colour. Just a plastic backing to the wing mirror.

    Thanks

dont offer them one from a scrap yard ,,,thats bound to get peoples backs up

depends on make/ model for the price, shouldnt be too bad and couldve been alot worse if the van had ripped the door off

No I would never tell them to get one from a scrap yard!

I called them earlier, thinking they would be open as it turns out the vehicle is owned by a company that does taxi's, airport runs etc..She said they will get someone to have a look at it tomorrow and they are not necessarily fussed about going through the insurance. She seemed nice, fingers crossed it wont be too much damage!

    Thanks again
  • they could charge you for the time it takes to take it to the garage

Surprised no ones mentioned that ideally when driving past parked vehicles, you should leave enough space for opening doors, and/or travel at such a speed that you are able to stop should a door open. So while opening a door in this manner isn't the best of ideas, the van driver should take some responsibility. Will it be a child running in front of the van next time and will he be able to stop?
