Or you'd have to be the holder of an EEA National ID card.

And which particular part of the OP's post made you think that s/he wasn't a British citizen?

The part where s/he didn't stipulate either way. You might not have noticed, but not everyone in the UK is a British citizen.

If we didn't assume that people were British citizens when they ask for help regarding benefits, jobseeking, education and etc we'd all be spending even longer on MSE than we are already!

I'm not really sure what benefits, jobseeking, education have to do with travelling to France or Belgium, but either way, it's better not to make sweeping statements like, "You would have to be absolutely mad to consider trying to travel abroad without a valid passport!". A great number of people all over the UK have every right to travel, anywhere in the EU, without taking their passport at all.

But the thing is without a passport abroad, you could end up in a sticky situation without one. Just my opinion really.

Again, in the cases of British citizens, I'd completely agree with this.

An EEA national (except ROI) would have still needed a passport to get into the UK.

Not unless they had their National ID card instead.

Perhaps you're someone who only frequents the travel board but most people on MSE come for advice in the areas listed in my post and also on finance. If you look through any other board I think you'll find that NOBODY ever gets asked if they're a British citizen before answering their question, unless there's something in their post that implies that they might be. It'll certainly make discussions go with a swing if people have to be questioned about their residential status before having their questions answered.

I guess those people who frequent those others boards are not wanting to travel abroad though so you don't need to ask that sort of questions.
