Switching ADSL ISP

I would like to switch my ADSL ISP. However, if I do so, will there be a gap in the broadband services I receive?
Currently, a 14-day period is normally required for an ISP to set up an account. If I switch my ISP, will there be a 14-day gap between the day when my old ISP closes my account and the day when services are available from the new ISP?
I work from home via the Internet, and 14 days without ADSL services would bring a huge dent to my income. How may I tackle this problem? Many thanks. :xmassmile

How about using good old dialup? Surely it wasn't difficult to come up with that solution!
Alternatively, instead of cancelling your current adsl line - migrate it to a different broadband provider, just ask your current ISP for your MAC - then you will only lose your connection for 5/10 minutes0 -
Thanks.
A dialup would be too slow for my work to do any good.
Can you please explain the second point, 'migrate it to a different broadband provider, ask your current ISP for your MAC'? Many thanks.0 -

As long as your present ISP (internet service provider) supports MAC numbers (not all do). Your move will hardly be noticable. You ask for your MAC from your ISP. They give you this code. When you sign up for a new internet company, you enter the MAC number you've been given. Sign up, and that's it. You will continue with your present company untill the switch to the new company is complete (normally around 5 days +/-). You will be told the day when the switch will happen, and you will only be without broadband for less than 1 hour (this is all it should take to switch you over at the exchange).
Chances are, that you will notice you can't connect to your normal ISP one day (or your broadband will stop), you will need to enter your new login details for the new company then.
You will be charged from your old company up till the switch (then they should stop charging), and should only start getting charged by the new company on the day of the switch. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

do you also have to give notice that you are cancelling the old service (assuming out of initial 12 month contract period) or is it automatically cancelled when migration goes thro0

Don't tell your company that you want to cancel!!! Chances are that you will end up with no broadband. Your MAC will be valid for one month once you are given it. Just sign up to the new company using the MAC. Your old company will be informed by your new company when the services have been switched. Then they will terminate your contract from the date of the switch. You don't have to tell the old company anything (apart from requesting a MAC).How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Hi
I am currently in the same situation where I wish to change providers. I am currently with Homecall who apperntly resell tiscalli packages and they are pants.
The problem is Tiscalli DO NOT support MAC !! which is a pain as it means cancelling then resubscribing with another provider, meaning no internet for 2 weeks !!.
After doing a little searching I came across this little site HERE which solves the problem of no internet access albeit its dialup but at least u can access the net while your waiting for you new provider to get up and running without having to sign up to a contract or pay for x amount of months.
HTH someone

tbh i would confirm with your old ISP after moving, that your account has been closed - just in case!0

Can anyone answer me this one?
I moved house about 8 months ago, renting out mine and renting one in another area.
My broadband connection with Pipex was cancelled and a new one set up in the new house. I now have to return to my own house. Is the line there still regarded as set up for broadband and could I just migrate my current account? or will it be regarded as a new connection with subsequent set-up charges? Cheers.0 -
you would have to get the line reactivated.... so you would have more charges to pay (assuming your provider charges them), or you will be locked in a 12 month contract0
