Does no one mince their own meat, I like to buy a steak and mince it, that way I really know whats in it. There were complaints about some of the tesco frozen mince, as it had all sorts of bits of body part in YUCK!
    Pawpurrs x ;)
  • I buy steak mince, but I buy from the butcher and he minces as you wait.

I also add lots of veggies/lentils/oats to whatever im making to stretch it out

Got a thing about fat on meat, so we buy topside and trim it then mince it. Extremely extravagent I know, but hey, who has no vices?

How big is a portion? Somerfield are doing 400g of steak mince at £1.75 at the moment if that's on your route (half price). 400g of steak mince as a chilli (+ tin of kidney beans + tin of tomatoes + couple of onions + a pepper) gives me 5-6 portions.
Perhaps I'm running myself down unneccessarily in previous post, two joints of topside (800g each) were £10 at Asda so not much more expensive than the quoted post above.

I don't like gristle or fatty chewy bits so don't go near cheap mine :o

I like the lean steak mince for health reasons (lower fat), as well as the fact there is less ucky fatty gristly chewy bits. I prefer it finely minced too.

Because I always pad it out with lentils, and extra veg etc I think it evens out the price difference (plus I try to look out for the offers too ;))
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?
  • On Saturday I made a chili but could only find a really small portion of mince in the freezer. For the first time ever I added two handfuls of green lentils at the start of cooking and while you could still see them (unlike the red ones I think that mush down) they didn't affect the taste of the chili...
In fact my Mum said she preferred it!! There was enough to put in the freezer for two more big portions in the future too.

Trimmed the two joints up last night, one into chunks for casseroles and one into mince for lasagne. They supermarkets have made it an art hiding fat and gristle and displaying only the best section of meat. By weighing before and after, we finished up throwing about 30% away - what a waste and hardly the bargain we thought we were getting.
We really want to enjoy what we're eating and refuse manky meat at any cost – I know, hardly the principles of a money saving expert!
  • I want to buy say 1.5kg of mince to make quite a few meals for two of us.

What is the best mince to buy? I dont mind spending a bit of money if it means no fatty bits.

I saw sainsburys has lean steak mince for £7 has anybody tried it ?

If you dont want any fat, then I would use Turkey mince, I dont think it has any flavour to it though, personally. I prefer Lamb mince. Does it have to be mince? Or could you get nice, cheaper cuts of meat, and blitz them?
I know my spelling is shocking  It is alot better than it used to be though :rotfl:
  • Hi thanks, I heard someone else said that Turkey mince smells a bit funny.

    I would prefer Lamb mince.

I could buy meat, good point.x
