Hi
This is my first post on OS, I have been reading through all the cheap receipe threads and I am off to asda to stock up for the week, my shopping usually comes in at 60 ish for the week.
I was wondering do you buy steak or beef mince
I usually always buy steak, but its just under £3 for two portions. I dont eat mince myself, but Oh and the girls have it the nights I am working.
What do you buy ?

How big is a portion? Somerfield are doing 400g of steak mince at £1.75 at the moment if that's on your route (half price). 400g of steak mince as a chilli (+ tin of kidney beans + tin of tomatoes + couple of onions + a pepper) gives me 5-6 portions.0 -
Sorry I mean two portions as in will do two nights, so OH and the girls will all get fed off one portion
I think it may be 250g, I will look on asda website.
There is a sainsburys on the way, I will nip in thank youLittle Miss Sparkles :A

250g steak mince at ASDA is about £1.69. I bought some the other day.
I normally try and buy the bigger portions and batch cook or split them. You get a lot more for your money.
Their standard mince is 300g for £1
Just looked online and their pricing seams to be different to the instore prices.0 -
Steak mince every time (local stuff for mince n tatties), any Scottish variety for lasagnes, shep pie etc.
I find by buying steak mince, as well as tasting better, you can stretch it further with veg etc (some people on GC swear by adding oats, lentils etc) although I don't like that.
Have you checked to see if your local butcher does any deals on mince, or can you get it reduced in the shops (I got 2 x 500g packs for £1.25 each, reduced from £2.69 per pack or 2 for £5 in Tesco)? I think most big supermarkets will often do deals where buying big packs or two packs works out better per kg. Also you can freeze it in portions if you prefer.

I almost always buy steak mince, I actually buy the extra lean stuff because of health/weight concerns and I bulk it with oats, tomatoes, grated carrot etc...Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0

I always buy steak mince as well. You have a better chance of knowing what is in it (I think)
