carpenter , new doors?

I just had a new carpet layed and all my doors had to be taken of so it could fit :(

Now im thinking to myself that i may as well buy all brand new doors as the previous ones are not to my taste anyway ,but if i buy some from b&q how much would it cost to get them fitted please?, what would i need to buy , apart from handles ....im no good at DIY so no point me trying it myself.

Also can i just any new door , as 4 of my doors are really small like cupboard door and electric cupboard door is a lot thinner then the other doors , the rest are normal , sorry i have no clue

Also how long would it take to do? , do they make a mess in your home doing it?

I would guess you are looking at about £100 a door.
You will need handles, the inner mechanism & the hinges.

Price could vary a lot depending on where you are in the country.

It could be a bit less.

I think my sister had hers done for £80 each, but that was a while ago & we are in rip-off/top-price south east:rolleyes:

Seems cheap, BUT look at the bit where it says they must fit.

The chances of your new off the peg doors fitting into your old frames are minimal, but you may be lucky.

The price will probably shoot up when they have to adjust...

A good trademan will leave it spotless.

Ah see what you mean now .....thanks for that .

Ill see if i can find doors same size as old ones but slighty less so it can fit over carpet , not sure if ill have any luck though....probably end up with limited choosing but sooner that then pay £100 a door to fit

Measure the doors, then get onto the B&Q website.

Our doors are 78" x 30"", and on the B&Q website these are exactly the same size @ £40 a door for glazed.

Now, im no expert, but im sure i can take a door off, take the hinges off the old door, measure the distance from the ends, and chip the hinges out.

Then drill the door catch out, and chisel it in.

There is a very good video guide on video jug.

I would try one door, and see how you get on..

Doors are almost always made slightly oversize and trimmed to fit. A door correctly fitted is usually slightly more trimmed on the face going into the frame, to allow for the effective width being from the hinge edge to the entry edge on the handle side. Then clearance will be cut for carpets etc.

Upshot is that you choose whether to change for new doors because of style before trimming, but new doors or old, you will have to trim.

Whereabout in the country are you - there's a little shop by me that does them for £50 fitted, they are just the plain white 4 panel ones, with plain brass or steel handles.
We're saving for new ones as we need 8.

I changed all my door a few years ago and it cost £25.00 a door for fitting. As I had 13 done at the same time I got a bit of a discount, £350 instead of £425. More than enough for one and a half days work at the time. The doors came from B&Q and were not particularly expensive. If you require some non standard sizes you may have to look at different suppliers, as they sometimes can get them in. We reused all the old handles and latches as there was nothing wrong with them. This obviously saved quite a lot of money.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
