Trojan Horse

Last week after Scanning with Norton I found a Trojan horse. This week I keep getting spam emails to myself from myself. As this is my main BT email address is there anything I can do? Am I also right that this may have gone out to my contacts ?

    Download MALWAREBYTES
    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
    UPDATE and FULL SCAN

Norton isnt very good at all in my honest opinion

If youve recieved them from yourself then theres a VERY good chance all your contacts will have yes.
Open up your BT mail and (If its an online one, im unsure) check the SENT folder to see if theres anything been sent.
Change the password (Make it a good jumble of letters, characters and numbers)

    full instructions for Malwarebytes use
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

  • i would advise getting another antivirus programme too, Norton is a resource hogger, there are many free programmes you can use which are better. i think many people will agree the same on here

Trojan horse install a program on you computer which allows someone else to get access to or control your pc or gather information on your pc for illegal purposes

    Hence the name Trojan horse
  • How are they able to do this with a firewall in place? Sorry but I'm no good with technical stuff.

They look for exploits within your browser or you download a dodgy program/file etc

Thats why is best getting a decent browser with some security like Firefox with no script addon. A good anti virus/firewall and a malware program like malwarebytes or superantispyware

You also have to be careful what anti virus you have now as they are many fake kicking about
  • Thanks. The fake anti virus....how can you tell? I assume that if you buy from McAfee directly then this should be safe....

If you buy from a shop or online web site it should be okay

These fake AV are the latest attempt. I have had one myself

They can disable your whole system, lock you out remove admin privileges etc

I found superantispyware the best for finding these out. My friend who is in IT recommended it to me he uses it every day on infected pc's at work
