I found an important fact that even though there are sell by dates on my mega big containers of milk they do not go off but lumpy.Be aware that the minute you open the milk it starts to perish and therefore the sell by dates become meaningless.Once air gets to supermarket milk its ruined...How many times I have been at familys and friends and opened their milk and you can smell it is not right. They just say it was only opened three days ago and the sell by date is in date.Once I explain they get ti.Butter and marerine are the same.We get it in and out of the fridge changing its temperature. So now I buy smaller amounts of everything.Big is great if you have a large family but 3 and under no way.

I agree. I think that this is the problem.

Being ardent moneysavers the tendancy is to buy the larger containers but after 3 days, if not used, then get ready to chuck it.

Funny, somehow sour milk is quite acceptable but LUMPY sour milk... Uugh.

Just for fun, next time you make a coffee, shake the milk hard before pouring on the coffee. Goes all froffee like cappacino.:)

I can only dream of milk being in my fridge long enough to go off, my lot go through it like water. I use 4 to 6 pints per day. They are all big strong healthy things though, so I can't really complain. We always joke we need a cow to cope with the demand.

Same here mishmash, haven't smelt gone off milk for years!! Doesn't stand a chance. I have noticed tho that the filtered milks have a really long best before date, guess thats the advantage of them. Mr T seems to sell filtered milk cheaper than ordinary milk which I've never undersood as surely its been processed more and therefore more expensive to produce? Is there any nutritional change in filtered milk?

I had loads of coupons for free candidia milk (UHT) normally hate the stuff but its really good.

I used one of those coupons for free Candia milk and liked it so much it's now my preferred choice. I love milk! My brother and I used to drink gallons of the stuff when we were kids and (touch wood) have never broken a bone

Bunny200 - there's no nutritional change in filtered milk. The filters used are so fine that the fat globules in the milk are broken up and dispersed evenly throughout the water phase of the milk.

The reason that pasteurised milk goes lumpy is that the pasteurisation process(72.4 ºC for 15 seconds) kills off the pathogenic bacteria (these are the ones that can make you ill) but it doesn't kill off all of the spoilage bacteria. Therefore, as the milk ages, the spoilage bacteria grow, albeit slowly in a fridge and cause the milk to go lumpy.

It's illegal to sell unpasteurised milk in Scotland, but not sure what the position is in England?
  • AFAIK raw milk cannot be sold in England in retail outlets i.e. supermarkets/shops, restaurants/cafes etc.

However, it can be sold direct by the dairy

There's a list of raw milk producers on the Seeds of Health website. If you have a local farmers' market, ask there too. Even if the dairy doesn't sell at the market, the other producers may know of someone locally.

There was a campaign about two years ago to promote raw (or Green Top) milk, but I can't find it now and can't remember who sponsored it.

I'm lucky - my local dairy still delivers milk, direct to the doorstep in a reusable glass bottle. I get Gold Top and nothing else! :) I also have another dairy about 5 miles away that sells raw milk at the farmgate. Somehow, it feels very virtuous to drink something so natural :)

I think it's Waitrose that still sells non Homogenised milk.

  • Although I might buy 3 pints on a shopping trip, I buy 3 individual pints rather than one bigger bottle... it does seem to keep fresh well upto and slightly over its sell-by date so long as it isnt opened. (I buy semi-skimmed btw, which I guess due to the less cream content would keep a bit longer than whole milk anyway?)
In the probably unlikely event that I actually post something of use to someone, an ickle vote of thanks would be much appreciated, in fact I might frame it and put it up on the wall next to my cycling proficiency certificate :D

I only buy Candidia, but I never get vouchers :-(
  • I have noticed that the milk I buy from the farm shop lasts longer ( and tastes better ) than supermarket
