Has anyone else noticed that modern milk from supermarkets goes lumpy nowadays, without going off?
It separates but still tastes OK but leaves a sludge in the bottom of the cup.
Times were when you could smell the milk and know that it was off but not so nowadays.
If you leave it long enough it does get a bit rancid though.
Am I the only one?

AFAIK, these days milk is homogeised, which means it goes lumpy first

Ours smells and doesn't go lumpy for ages. I find milk from the supermarket goes off quicker unless you buy the cravendale stuff or something like that than the stuff I get delivered. One day I might be more organised...........

Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
My one thing is milk....
I have to have fresh every day sometimes two days is okay..but cant stand powdered semi or skimed...in fact my idea of heaven was when my older brother was woking on the local dairy farm and just scooped a big 3 litre bottle out of the pan every night put it in the fridge and in the morning we had spoon out the cream before we got to the milk at the bottom.....

Yes I notice this and I think it is because it is homogenised too.
I buy unhomogenised milk from a local dairy and it goes off.
With the whole milk which has the cream line, you get a very sour smell around the top of the carton where the cream has stuck, this makes the milk smell off when it isn't.
I must say I like the fact that it sours properly. I use up sour milk in baking and feel I'm getting a more natural product. I'd buy unpasteurised milk if I could find it.0 -
My village market sells unparturised milk/yogurt and cheese and its really nice.
I had loads of coupons for free candidia milk (UHT) normally hate the stuff but its really good.Pawpurrs x0 -
I keep getting coupons for a free 1L of Candia at Sainsburys but I've never managed to find it in stock yet
. I nearly picked up Cravendale by mistake, which would have been embarrassing at the checkout.
Back to topic - I had a carton of longlife that was on its use-by and that went very thick at the bottom. Mind you it had been open for several days.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I found an important fact that even though there are sell by dates on my mega big containers of milk they do not go off but lumpy.Be aware that the minute you open the milk it starts to perish and therefore the sell by dates become meaningless.Once air gets to supermarket milk its ruined...How many times I have been at familys and friends and opened their milk and you can smell it is not right. They just say it was only opened three days ago and the sell by date is in date.Once I explain they get ti.Butter and marerine are the same.We get it in and out of the fridge changing its temperature. So now I buy smaller amounts of everything.Big is great if you have a large family but 3 and under no way.0
