If You Use Bt Broadband Be Warned

BT seem to have recontracted anybody that went out of contract recently and haven't advised them that they are now in an 18 month contract. You only find out if you request a MAC or cancel your BB and then they hit you for cancellation fees and charges.

Here's my story and I apologise for the length, but it will let you know how inept and useless BT have become and why I am happy to be shot of them.

After having BT BB for 3 years I decided to save some money and shop around. I decided on sky after they offered me a better & cheaper phone, BB and TV package and were £20 per month cheaper than the equivalent BT packages.

So in September I asked for my MAC and was advised by BT that my BB was within a 18 month contract signed in the last few weeks.:confused::confused:
I was under the impression that my existing BT BB contract expired at the end of June and I was free to go at any point after that. BT had alreday dropped my discount and I was paying full whack for Option 1. The advisor said that he would sort it out and a Mac was eventually issued. I missed out on one Sky deal and had to wait another month so the MAC expired.

I called again on 13th October and again was told that I was in an 18 month contract which started in September (coincidently on the exact date I called the last time). At this point I raised a complaint that I had no knowledge of this agreement nor had I agreed to be tied to BT for another 18 months, if they checked their records they would have seen my MAC request. I've been told that it would be few days before they got back to me. In the following 4 weeks I've tried to get an update from BT to be told my complaint has been escalated and I should get a call within the next 48 hours ( 5 times this happened and on one call I spoke to 19 !!!!!! "BT customer advisors" I use that term loosely as their customer care skills were lacking at best).

So what's the outcome I here you ask. I finally last night got a call from BT telling me that I was no longer shackled to their BB service, I'm £20 better off per month and my BB speed has doubled overnight. But the main thing is to warn all other MSE readers of BT's "computer error" that they are only fixing when challenged.
