Bt broadband problem!

A couple of weeks ago i went to pay my latest bt bill online which i always do, only to notice that i was being charged £4.46 for a service which i have never even used(BT Caller Display)!? i only use my BT Landline for my broadband connection, and have never had a phone connected to it!!anyway ...

Out of interest i viewed my bills from the last 6months only to find i was charged £4.46 on them bills also. so i emailed BT to tell them i wanted £13.38 (£3 x £4.46) deducted from my latest bill, as i have never and don't intend on using the BT caller Display service. I have been in contact with BT via email around 3 times a week, and they informed me that it had been deducted from my account, but it hadnt!! so i rang them, only to get through to someone obviously not based in the UK who didnt have a clue what they were talking about!! so i emailed them again, and they informed that it had now been deducted from my latest bill and they were ssending a letter of confirmation out in the post.

well today i recieved that letter dated 5th nov 08, confirming deductions of £13.38 to my latest bill and was now available to view online, so i went to pay it again this morning and it still hadnt been amended! so...

i started to wonder, exactly how long have i been being charged for this caller display service during my last 3 yrs as a customer to BT. i have requested to view all my bills since signing up for broadband with them. what are my chances of actually getting to see these bills? and would i be able to cancel my contract with them as they arent really providing much of a service are they, overcharging me for a service never used!! sorry for the ESSAY, its just really bugging me now!!

any advice on this matter is greatly appreciated,

thankyou

  • BT offer caller display free if 2 charged calls are made each month. This looks as though you have the free caller display on you account and as you said you dont use the line for calls so the 2 calls needed to keep the free caller display have not been made so the charge has been applied.
As long as you dont have cps on your line you will get a full refund and also ask for the free caller display to be removed from your account to stop any more charges.
  • Yet another example of good old BT making the most out of its customers with hidden charges. As a user of Vonage (internet telephone service), I pay BT £10 a month for the privilege of having a phone line for my broadband service. But like you, I just discovered that they have been charging me £7 a quarter for Caller ID and BT Answer 1571, because I failed to make two chargeable calls per month.

I called BT and asked to disable the features immediately, which they agreed to do. I then asked if they would reverse some of these previous charges as a gesture of goodwill. I guess the call-centre operator and his manager have yet to attend the goodwill training course, as they both insisted they were completely unable to reverse the charges. Shame really - refunding a few quid as a gesture of goodwill can go a long way, but now it's just one more reason to go shopping for a new phone line provider.

I'd be interested to know if anybody has managed to get any goodwill out of BT in situations like this.
  • i recieved an email notifying me that the caller display charges from last 9months have been credited to my latest bill, including the VAT also. They also say that i will not be charged for caller display again,
it was a mistake on our part to charge you for a service which you have not and do not wish to use in the future[E/QUOTE]

i also requested my bills from all the time i have been contracted to bt, and today i got a reply saying they are willing to send me copies by mial, but i will be charged £4.70 per copy of each bill if i wish to do it. can they do this?? do they charge that amount because they know no1 is going to cough up that sort of money for them! espescially as i have been with them 3 years almost now.

STAY AWAY FROM BT PEOPLE FOR GODS SAKE!! far too much hassle

You have had access to your bills, but chose not to keep them. You have asked BT for copies of your old bills & yes they are entitled to charge for that service. They are not a charity, but a business operating in a competitive marketplace. I wanted a copy of a gas bill that had gone astray in the post & British Gas wanted £12.50 per page!!!!

When I had a BT account problem, I was offered copy bills also. I explained that I didn't want the bill as such, but needed to check that I had not been incorrectly charged for a service I hadn't requested. I was then sent FREE copies as a gesture of goodwill. Easy!

If you don't pay by direct debit, you are paying £18pa more than you need to. You may be able to see the past bills online, free, if you register
