I am in the same situation. I phoned them to ask and even though there is a landline at the same address (one of my housemates's) they will still charge 129.99!!! (they said if it's in a different name than they have to harge as a new landline.)
I asked about the promotion with 29.99 for who takes a 18months contract.... but they said it's only for customers who come from Virgin. I f you come from noone you pay the huge bill!! Outrageous!0 -
Talk Talk is cheap. There is no way round that connection charge though. BT wholesale (the ones responsible for the engineers and maintaining the BT network) will charge the same connection fee to BT retail (the ones that will sell you the line and bill you) as they do to talktalk or any other provider who uses the BT network.
The connection fee is standard, if you are struggling paying this in one go then BT can offer spread connection. This means that they will spread the connection fee over a years worth of bills.0 -
ouch as we are deaf we would not use landline phone much & got dongle usb internet and it crap, we would need broadband but £129.99 it too deep :-(0

They're full of it....
I rang BT last week to ask about installing a new line in my new appartment that i am moving into next week.
They quoted me £125 for a new line, which I said I was not prepared to pay as i was renting etc. and may only be there for 6 months.
They basically said tough, thats the price take it or leave it.
I then found the offer for £29.99 on these very forums and called them back.
They are apparently not allowed to tell you about this offer but if you ask for it they have to acknowledge it and talk you through it.
I got installation for £29.99 (bear in mind i am currently a BT customer too, not virgin or anyone else)
so long as i agreed to sign up for one of their tariff's for phone plus calls etc.. which starts at about £11-12 per month for evening and weekend calls and goes upto about £16 for free local and nation calls anytime.
which i am already on. they said i would be tied to that for 12 months and that was it.
They are coming to install on the 17th of this month as I move in on the 15th (next week).
They were very helpful once i mentioned the offer..
Give em another go, if not try again and see if you get another adviser that will help.

Also best ISP out there by far if you can get it...
is www.bethere.co.uk
and if you go through quidco, you get £40 cashback too...
They are upto 24Mb download and 1.3Mb upload and TRUE unlimited, no fair usage etc.. all for £18 per month.
They also have an offer on for upto 8mb speed for £8 per month until the end of dec 08.
