  • My friend's employer offers credit insurance to businesses (MFI's suppliers) in order to protect them against the risk of non-payment/default etc and the rumours she has heard are very bad in relation to MFI. I have £1,000 worth of MFI vouchers so I am off to spend them in the morning.

We had a MFI kitchen installed sometime ago, and have been really pleased with it - everything arrived that was ordered and on the date agreed. Have bought several items from them and again never had a problem.

I priced the whitegoods separately and told them I was buying elsewhere....they then price matched or bettered the online prices I had found...literally knocked hundreds off the quote! and because it just meant waiting for one delivery we went with them.

how much difference did you save?

I have priced up a Bosch hob, oven and extractor. Best price on the internet is £1150 - MFI want over £1600. Can I really get them to price match?

    Howdens v's MFI.
Howdens do 2 main kitchen ranges. Flat pack (similar to old MFI Hygena) and ready made (similar to ready built schreiber). They offer a 'contract' range with metal draws and some with less depth to run pipes behind without cutiing the backs. Most of the doors are from the MFI hygena and schreiber ranges but some are swapped between the ranges. I.e. You may find a Hygena MFI door on a Schreiber Howdens range or vice versa. In general If you want ready built and to collect without delivery delay then use Howdens for the schreiber stuff. If you want flat pack and are prepared to wait then get Hygena from MFI.

How do I get a quote from Howdens?

I went into my local Howdens last week and they gave me a brochure, but refused to give me prices saying they are trade only.
  • I went i yesterday and they did not even try to match the price of the range cooker and extractor hood, they just said are you getting elsewhere when they saw the comet price

They do have price lists but you are meant to join and become a member which means convincing them your trade. This was not difficult for me because i went in and simply told them that i renovate properties and they let me join. I also showed them my selco card.
I guess if you went in lacking confidence and not looking trade like they might turn you away. You may need to take a business card or letter head or go with someone that is trade depending on the discretion of the branch.
If you go in asking for a quote or a plan you will not look trade. Most trade people know exactly what they want. Get a plan and breakdown list free from MFI. Then go into Howdens with your mucky overalls and say 'Can you give us a price in this mate"?
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j

We had a kitchen from MFI 9 years ago and I am still pleased with it. We got all our bedroom furniture from them also and would definately buy from them again. We got our own fitter to assemble them as the price for their men doing it was almost as expensive as the units.
  • I spent my Tesco clubcard vouchers - I bought a pine bunk bed, 2 single mattresses, a king size victorian style bedstead and a king size mattress and a computer chair. All items were in the sale, I said seen as I have bought so much what discount will you give me ? they gave me an extra 5% off and half price delivery. Total cost was £965 with no cash spent only my Tesco vouchers - very pleased with my purchases.

But it just goes to show sometimes they will offer a discount if you ask.
