Have chatted to them there seems to be little flexibility in the £40 router fee.
However they also made me aware that there is also a £30 connection fee but said that they might be able to credit my account with £10 if I took this up.

Athiest how about 'recomend a friend'? Virgin gave me and my friend £50 when i signed him up to virgin, its now £30 i think, its worth seeing if it applies to broadband only to save yourself £30

Thanks to all your help on this. By calling 0161 283 5510 was not only able to get the £30 referral but got the £30 installation fee waived. This meant that in affect I only paid £10 for the wireless router with a £30 in credit sometime soon.
