I nned to get my fridge /freezer fixed but scared I'll be ripped off.

Hi My fridge/freezer broke down a while ago and I've ben using a tiny larder fridge.
With Xmas coming up I need to get it fixed but I don't know anyone who does repairs and neither does my friends.
I'm scared to pick a random guy out of the book cos he might rip me off (especially if they see I'm a single mum), so what can I do to minimilise that risk?

Thanks

try and get someone to recommend a repair man.
and then ask for a quote.
set a limit. dont pay more than say 50/80 quid. as you can buy a new FF for 170 quid.
(with a minimum 2 yr warranty).
    Get some gorm.

What make is it? Many manufacturers have repairers they will recommend, if you have the instruction book it may tell you in there.

I think that you need to get a quote before any work is started. It is almost always the compressor that goes wrong, and any competent repairer would have plenty of experience of replacing one and also know the cost. Tell them, that if it is likely to go over a certain amount, that you specify, then you don't want it repaired. Just as ormus suggests.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • if you lived near me ,,you could buy mine off me for a reasonable fee..only swapping and getting rid for integral stuff
  • Hi, You say your freezer broke down, can you explain in what way it no longer functions to your expectations, please?
Has the internal lamp malfunctioned or perhaps the door no longer closes...Does the temp. rise to high for your liking? Is it plugged into the electrical main circuit or is it per-chance a gas powered unit?

I would be on the look out for either a used fridge, or a cheap new one.

I think BEKO are the cheapest on the market these days.

You could try asking on the forums here...http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/.......the peeps over there know their stuff, and should be able to help.
  • Hiya

contact your local Help the Aged, Age Concern offices. They usually have a list of recommended workmen that they're quite willing to share. Also check your local council, mine have a list of approved workmen, if they get bad reps they get bumped off the list. If you get a name run it through Google just to see if anyone has posted bad reports.
