I'd go for a Mondeo for 1k

Way too big for our needs.

The nearest supermarkets are only between one and 4 miles away so I just need something that is small, cheap to run, get me from a to b and do about 4 x 200 mile return trips throughout the year.

Have you considered a Citroen Xsara 1.4, for around £1000 you should get a 2000 or 2001 model and they come with lots of safety kit such as four airbags and abs. these cars are fantastic value.

They are a tad larger but as you are only doing low mileage the reduction in mpg will not be big.

    None available in our area.
