I've been Money Tipped!
We have a budget of £1000 which will buy us a 2001 CITROEN SAXO 1.1i Desire 5dr Hatchback with about 70000mls on the clock.

Has anyone got this model and does anyone know how reliable and economical they are please?

Ta.

I'd rather take public transport than travel in a Saxo

    Oh eck!

    What do you suggest then?

Needs to be cheap to run, will only do about 40mls per week and is only for 3 of us.

Don't forget I only have £1000 to spend.
  • We adored our Saxo until we got squashed by a merc. They just run and run, we've got a citroen c3 now which isn't even a quarter as reliable or robust as the saxo.
They really retain their value becasue they are robust little cars, would go back to one in a heartbeat when we next change cars.

I used to own a Saxo vtr it never let me down once in the time I had it, but I got rid as I just did not feel safe in it:confused:
  • as ive said in other posts i ran one up to 170k without 1 fault from new, this was a 1.0 so very similar to the 1.1

It has airbags and side impact protection but with any car that was first releasedd in '96 its going to look dated to todays standards

People say they are basic but they forget that they cost lest than 6 grand new for the basic models

My mate has a 1.1i Peugeot 106 which is basically the same car but with a different badge on it. His is the 'independent'. He bought that for around £1000 (51 reg 65k on the clock) and it has lasted so well. It is his first car so hasn't treated it as well as it should have been treated. He's put a lot of miles on the clock. Its never ever let him down though!
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
  • [FONT=&quot]Have you considered a Citroen Xsara 1.4, for around £1000 you should get a 2000 or 2001 model and they come with lots of safety kit such as four airbags and abs. these cars are fantastic value.

They are a tad larger but as you are only doing low mileage the reduction in mpg will not be big

Ah yes, good call, these came above any vw in a reliability chart, i would certainly consider one, like a mini xantia!
