Best job websites and agencies?

I got made redundant yesterday and for the first time in my life I am actually having to apply for jobs rather than have people headhunt me, which means I don't totally know where to start!

I have sent my CV to a local agency, and have looked on Reed and Office Angels, neither of which had much to suit me, and on TotalJobs which had a fair few in my field.

I know of Monster and will look on there now, but I wondered where else people recommend?

I am a trained journalist/editor/proofreader so ideally am looking in that field at 25k plus, but will also look at admin roles as the market is tough and I need a job!

Where do people recommend as good places to search? I am based in the Berks/Bucks/Oxon area and will commute to London if necessary (although I'd rather not do that again if at all possible!).

:)

    There's also localjobs.com.

Assuming there's a newspaper/magazine that fits your field, presumably there will be jobs listed in there ie I'm a scientist, so I check the back of NewScientist every week (actually there's always lots of adverts for editors and proofreaders in the back of NewScientist, although I dare say they often want scientific qualifications as well).

I guess the other option for a journalist would be to go freelance.

With Job websites try to apply directly to companies, there are a hell of a lot of so called recruitment agencies which infact just collect CVs and sell your details for advertising purposes. They post fake job vacancies and just sit back as the CV's roll in.
Not being sure if this site is UK or not, if your in the UK the jobcentre website is actually not bad.

Can I suggest that you actually visit your local recruitment consultant with a copy of your cv and ask their opinions of format and content - and take their advice. They will probably have ideas on what you could do to improve it - remember it's the consultant who decides whether he wants to send your cv to his clients and he/she only wants to send them the best ones.

Also for your sort of job I think that the Guardian's on-line job section might be a good bet.

The very best of luck to you in your search.
  • If you are looking for uk jobs then you could try Careers & Jobs as they have been getting some good reviews recently as they have just revamped their site

She asked me to email it to her so that's what I did. I'm talking to her again tomorrow.

    Hi
Kind of feel where you are coming from. I got made redundant in August after nearly 12 years with my former company. I am now temping through a major high street agency who have been good and kept me in work with good pay.

I have posted my c.v. on Monster and Fish4Jobs and had a few calls from companies and agencies interested in my c.v. However, I quite like where I'm temping at the moment and it could be long term so happy to continue for a while.

Also check out reed.co.uk for local jobs in your sector and area and apply online.

    Good luck.

  • thank you for your good advice, i think at the moment both me & the wife have sent are cvs off to nearly all online job sites god can send ,however most of them ,like jobsearch etc do have jobs ,but not within my reach area of travel to work,or sometimes nothing that in are catergory. so most of them we hardly bother with much, going in my adress book i have the following

CAREERS IN LOGISTICS never anything there for me
CHECK FOR JOBS apears to be more of a search engine with links to other sites rather a jobs channel in its own right
CHESHIRE JOBS is useful in both area of work but recently has run dry for me
FISH 4 JOBS again is useful in both areas but again has run dry
FRIENDS REUNITED JOBS don't paear to have anything for us
JOBCENTRE PLUS obvously is are key site
JOBSBOARD appears to be just a search engine or somthing
JOBSTODAY is ok there is some there but very accassionally
JUMP TO JOBS again is ok but again as above
REED this is also ok but at the moment as above
TOTAL JOBS is ok too when theres work there
MONSTER not on my system but had it in the past & failed to deliver in my view
WORKTRAIN is ok ,but feel is more of a copy right of jobcentre plus

if anyone feels there are other sites that might deliver, then please bring it on

I'd think again about Monster - I've had a few agencies contact me after they found my cv on the site.
