PasturesNew wrote: »My parents had one of those crumbling houses next to them. Odd history to it, but the house was in trust to the kids with the mother having the right to live in it while she was still alive. Thing is, she went ga-ga and put in a home, the daughter moved out and the son lived there alone, bedridden until he died of cancer - ahead of the mother. So along comes the father (genuinely a multi-millionaire in his 80s) and instead of using his team of builders etc (a lot of his more recent money had been from genuine/proper development) he decided to do it up himself "to save a bob or two".
It took AGES! He fitted the gas himself, you could smell the gas leak. He built an extension/lean to (badly). And evenutally it was sold. Bloke who bought it had to spend a LOT of money to put it right. He said to me one day "I thought I was buying a refurbished/perfect house" but all he did was uncover bodge after bodge after bodge. You wouldn't believe how many bodges one man could put into a house. Especially as he actually had a whole team of professionals at his disposal. All rules and regs were either not known, or deliberately ignored as he knew best/better.
Must be loads about.
(P.S. in case you're wondering about the gas, the bloke who bought it is a bone-fide gas fitter/CORGI registered, so the chance of instant death was averted!)
Next door neighbour of a friend of mine bought a place like that. Chap who'd done it up, had left all sorts of bodges that the family had to find out bit by bit. Gas leak under the floorboards; lead pipes as soon as the copper ones went out of sight; dodgy wiring throughout. They said they knew they'd have to rip up the laminate flooring & repaint the place when they moved in, but weren't expecting all the other stuff."Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.0 -

Firstly, I'm not laughing. I don't like the idea of anyone living in a house and being evicted, repossessed, and bankrupted. I'm sorry you are in this position.
But, and secondly, it is not my fault you took on a 6 x mortgage, nor that your business plan has come unstuck....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
OK, lay off, we all should.
Either:

(2) THe OP is genuine. So he's in a difficult enough position anyway....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

It's sad and I do feel for FTBs and families who bought a home to live in during the boom peak and may need to choose between paying for a good Christmas or paying their mortgage but no more sad than the FTBs not being able to get onto the property ladder because of property developers. Afterall the rich are rich because of the poor, I couldn't see a property developer standing back at an auction to let a couple with kids buy their first house cheaper because they felt "sorry" for them.0 -

Agreed NDG, however, if it is number 2 then his amateur BTL empire is not the easy ride he thinks it is and they should have thought about the bad times as well as the good.0 -

TBH I knew you'd call me a troll for confronting you with the reality behind this crash you all want so badly. Sorry for spoiling your fun and for suffering out in the open and not hiding away.
Thing is, you know people like me are out there so why do you immediately shout "troll" when one pops up? You talk enough about buy to let landlonrds going under and you love it maybe you don't love it so much when there's a real person behind it.
Call me a troll if it makes you all feel better revelling in other's misfortune but it won't make me any less real. Maybe I am a plonker for borrowing too much but I never made more than a few grand on each property, just a bit extra to pay for the odd holiday, special needs equipment for my youngest, nothing fancy or extravagant. Maybe it was a gamble but for people like me, it was a bit of much needed extra income. Now we're facing losing everything. I am not looking for help and I'm not looking for sympathy but the least you can do is hear me out and be aware i exist.0 -

Most people have to work for things like this.
Me? I have been saving for a deposit for the last three years due to sky-high prices and have had to go without luxuries like this full stop.....
Please stop feeling sorry for yourself and blaming everyone for your error.0 -
Awww poor baby.
You started this thread with the sole intention of causing arguements related to your inflammatory remarks. That's what a troll is. I have not seen anything constructive or useful in your posts on this thread - only insults and lashing out at people who have nothing to do with your misfortune.
The "reality" behind the crash? How much thought did you give to the "reality" behind the bubble? How much thought did you give to families living in sub-standard accomodation and throwing away their money on rent because others thought they'd make a fast buck by pushing property prices out of the reach of normal people. Not much at all I bet. It's too late to whine now. You've gambled and appear to be losing. So when Christmas comes let's hope you are honest and say "Daddy made a mistake" rather than "lots of nasty people made Daddy poor". If nothing else then your kids will grow up to respect you more for it.
There are plenty of moneysaving ideas on this board, I suggest you start taking sound advice. If you are struggling for Christmas then scale it down - your kids don't need the earth and if it comes down to presents or a home then you know what you have to do.0 -

You can't take a pop at other people for this - taking on a 6 times mortgage??!!!! :eek:0 -

Sorry but if you've overstretched yourslelf by that much you've only got one person to blame and that's yourself. Take responsibility for your own actions and choices.
Alot of people are rightfully happy that because of falling prices they may soon be able to afford to buy a house which have been rising out of their reach for years because of greedy speculation. What is wrong with that? As in all situations there are winners and losers, it's just the balance is shifting.0
