Caravan, or Hotel with 2 nippers??

Hi

Quick question, I have two kids, and am thinking of booking somewhere abroad, possibly... for summer 09. Kids will be aged 2(nearly 3), and 11 months old. What sort of room will I end up in if booking a hotel?

Just weighing up my options- Caravan in France or UK, or hotel room in Spain?

Surely that will depend upon the type of room you book?

Ok, very clever, clearly clarification required here ..... What are my options?... Double room with a double bed, a little camp bed and a cot rammed in the corner with no room to store anything? Or do Hotels offer bigger rooms for families? I'm new to this travel with two kids thing. Have done it with one, and a cot in the room is fine, but the rooms we've had would be crammed with 2 kids in them. I've stayed in a range of hotels with my eldest, and always thought, where would we put two kids in here? How do families do it? Sorry if its a stupid question but I'm guessong you don't know unless you do it.

Caravan in France, pick one south of La Rochelle for better weather http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=la+rochelle, with great family friendly facilities

That will depend on the hotel, some will and some won't, just do some research and choose something that will be suitable for your needs.

Does it have to be a hotel in Spain? If you are considering a caravan in France why not look at villa or apartment holidays in Spain which should give you a wider choice of accomodation variables.

Fab thanks for that advice, any reasons why not a hotel?? I favour the hotel option, but may not be most sensible, I bow down to the knowledge of those with more experience!!

I would opt for Caravan in France. We have done both when the kids were tots. The hotel in Spain is great because you generally get a maid to tidy up after you all!!! But we always ended up on uncomfy beds, squashed into a room meant for 2 (unless you want to pay daft money). Hotels can be restrictive with kids. The freedom of a caravan with your own kitchen and no set meal times is great with tiny ones. We stayed here this year:

They have little chalet type accomodation(very similar to caravans - nicely positioned) and the site is beautiful - right on the beach with lots to do round and about for all ages.
  • hi,

We have done both the things you suggest. Much prefer the caravan, easier to feed the kids, they have alot of freedom on a campsite, we love it. We are going to Turisocampo in Portugal in 2009, last two weeks in June in a static caravan for £395.00 with Europarcs, plus Easyjet flights of £260.00. We also loved Vilnanova Park in Spain near Barcelona, again easy to get to on public transport so works out quite cost effective. Hope you enjoy whatever you do!

I've always stayed in hotels with my children, although its more difficult with 3 tha it was with 2!many hotels can accomodate a family, its just a case of finding out which ones. try popping into your local travel agent for some ideas.

just_looking, what part of Sapin ware you considering. I go to the Costa Brava (without kids) but there are numerous agents that rent apartments/villas etc that mean you don't all end up in one room like you would in a hotel and your also not on a campsite (unless thats what you want).

  • Thanks for this advice- its really useful.

We were thinking about Costa Del Sol, or Costa Brava. BUT there's the problem of flying with a 2 yr old and a 23 month old. We did it last year with the 2 yr old who was 1, and planned it meticulously, only to have a 5 hour delay on the flight which messed everything up, don't know how we'd cope with 2 on the plane! also the hotel room was fine, (was a Riu) but would be nowhere big enough for 2 kids.

On the other side of the coin, we went to away last week for 4 days, and the amount of stuff in the car made us wonder if it was possible to get everything in the car for a 10-14night break to France!! And also, how would two kids under 2 cope with the long drive and ferry crossing and stuff???

I wonder sometimes if I should just put a tent up in the back garden!!! But could do with some sunshine- and lets face it, this summer in the UK was rubbish apart from 1 week.
