PC won't recognise monitor

One way to test your keyboard is to hold down a key as you switch the computer on. If you get a load of beeps, then you know that the PC's recognised the keyboard and is warning you that there's a stuck key.
You don't say whether the PC has on-board video or a separate video card. The way to tell this is that if the video output on the back of the PC is up near the mouse/keyboard/parallel port (etc) then it's probably on board). If it's separate it'll be in the slots below.
If you don't get beeps from the keyboard, and still no output, then I'd be leaning towards a knackered motherboard personally....0 -
You mean a spare video card? Shove it in and try it... if you don't try, you'll never know!SiMaster wrote:i have a spare physical adapter board
There may be an error message on POST (Power On Self Test), which you won't see unless you get a video output, obviously!0 -
yea no beeps from the keyboard.
it has an onboard video card.
im learning towards the conclusion the mother board is eff'd too.
is there anyway to test the mother board - with out a monitor of course?0 -
there's also not a sound from the hard drive during boot up - would this be the case if the motherboard was fried?0

Possibly... I'd open the case up and fire it up, put your hand on the HD and see if you can feel it working.
If the mobo's properly knackered, there won't be any requests for data to the HD, so it'll be spinning (assuming that the power supply is working fine), but you won't hear (or feel) it 'chugging' away!
Definitely sounds kaput to me though... i wonder if eBay would be able to help you with a replacement... although probs not before chrimbo now

yea i think my conclusion is it's kaputz - tried spare video card nuffing happened, nothing coming from the hard drive either (spinning away happily on it's own no a vibration to be had), key board not making a sound either.
thanks for your help indiegirl im coming straight to you next time i exploded a computer.0 -
try reseating the ram and processor, or pulling the ram out altogether.., then switch on.. If the motherboard is working, you would normally get some beeps to tell you that there is no ram or processor installed..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

One thing to try, does the motherboard may have an onboard graphics card? Does the PC also have a PCI/AGP graphics card as well. If the PCI/AGP card is plugged in then the motherboard would disable the on board one, and, if you are plugged into that one you will not see anything on screen.
