PC won't recognise monitor

hi,

i just picked up a second hand pc off a friend (pent 3 500mhz) it switches - the green LED on the front comes on, the cd draw opens and closes but the monitor will not switch on - it stays in stand by mode.

i've hooked up the same monitor to a different pc and it works fine.

this leads me to think the pc isn't sending signal/ power to the monitor thus it won't come out of stand by.

i've opened up the pc to check the connections all are in place (seems to be anyway) - any suggestions off anybody.

need to get this fixed by next week it's my little sisters xmas present.

thanks for any help

Check that the PC has the correct or working Display Adapter Driver working
try safe mode to see if anything comes to life on the monitor, it could just
be that the wrong display adapter software has been selected.

At the risk of telling you something you know - hold down F8 when the PC is booting to get into safe mode (should bring up a mini-menu, options for safe and vga could be useful).

also my keyboards LED's won't light up either this leads me to think there may be something wrong with the interfaces at teh back of the PC of is this a mother board problem - again key board works fine on other computer?

Try another monitor on the PC if it dont work then the physical adapter
at the back of the PC will more than likely be duff.

yea tried another monitor and it does the same thing too - sits in standby mode, i have a spare physical adapter board but i don't think it's the problem - the question is why won't the keyboard switch on as well? this leads me to think there is a bigger problem - two physicall adapters (keyboard and monitor) aatached to same mother board don't work - why?

    any suggestions?
