I think it must be standing orders which are more flexible. I usually confuse the two!
For things where a set amount is taken each month, they only have to tell you initially, and when the amount changes.
The main advantage of this method is that you do not have to make new standing orders each time the payment amount changes.
A standing order is simply an order to your bank to pay a certain, fixed amount of money to a recipient a regular intervals.
The advantages of this method are that you know exactly how much is going out of your account and how often, and that you can set one up paying anyone (banks are quite particular about who they allow to operate direct debists).0
