  • Name of present: Vinyl Record Bowls
    Make or Buy? Make
    Total Cost: about 50p-£1
Details: Basically grab some old records you have lying around (or pop to a local charity shop/car boot etc) You then place the record on top of an oven proof glass bowl (i actually used a ceramic cassarole round dish) then put the oven on at about 200 degrees, WATCH IT ALL THE TIME! each record will start to "flop" at different stages!
When you see it flopping i open the oven and with a gloved hand just push the center down a bit into the bowl, this causes the edges to bend and shape into strange shapes which makes each one unique!

One valentines day after we had just moved in together and had no money I gave my boyfriend a wad of homemade vouchers. 1 voucher for a 30 minute massage, 1 voucher for a homemade dinner of his choice, 1 voucher for certain other romantic treats (enough said I think - use your imagination to dream up as many different things as you can). He loved them. I made them pretty and funny/ authentic you can do them on a computer, or with some coloured paper and fancy pens. Top tip - put an expiry date on the vouchers, my oh is still harbouring one of his for a rainy day!

  • Name of present? Handprint Keepsake

Do you make it or buy it? Make it

Total Cost? You can buy cheap card and childrens paint in Wilkinsons for under a pound

Details (the more the better) Print out the following poem for a family member and get your child to either make a border with their handprints or decorate the card with handprints. When I was teaching we always made these as Christmas presents for the children to give their parents - they were always a big hit.

There are always so many of my fingerprints to see,
On the furniture and walls from sticky, grubby me,
But if you stop and think a while,
    You'll see I'm growing fast,
    Those little handprints will disappear,
You can't bring back the past.
    So here's a small reminder,
    To keep not throw away,
Of how those tiny hands once looked,
To make you smile one day.
