When to ask to leave?

Our 12 month contract is due to run out with Virgin Media at the end of November.
We've been with them for nearly 10 years now and we took up a special offer last year to get the full XL package inc Setanta Sports and 8mb Broadband all for the Med size price of £30 per month.
Of course it meant signing up for 12 months which I had no quams about doing (I've always been happy with Virgin/NTL etc)
Just want to know when would I be best contacting them to see what they could offer us? Do I do it now before the month as run out or wait until the contract as finished?

We tried to change to Sky once but we found out that because our phoneline when we moved in was NTL and not BT it would now cost us something like £150 just to get a BT line connected to our home.

Their deals tend to change month by month so calling now to see if there are any really good deals for you might be worth a try. If they cant offer you something better it may be worth waiting until closer to the time.

Either way, when you call they will be able to advise you if you need to wait until it expires.

I'm going to phone up because I've never done this sort of thing before hope somebody could answer questions for me.
When I phone up I presume I go through to customer servies, and do I ask that my contract be stopped when it is finished? Or do I say that I have been looking around for a better deal when my contract expires and Sky have offered me such and such a deal.
Also would I need to get a genuine quote from Sky or do I be cheeky and make one up?
I don't want to fall on my face when they ask questions that I have no idea what I have said to them/

I think their customer services are used to people plucking figures out of the air :) I think they probably know all the excuses in the book too.

When i first joined, they gave me a discount for leaving sky to join them, but it was an offer they had at the time.

The fact that you have been with them for 10 years is a big advantage, maybe you could mention how loyal you are, they may have special deals available only to long term customers.

I would advise you just call them and explain that you are looking around for a better deal, and ask them if they can do anything better for you as you are such a loyal customer.

    You've two options.

Call Virgin Media Retentions (get the number from http://www.saynoto0870.com) and say that you're coming up to the end of the contract & you've seen some good deals at Sky and ask what the best deal they can offer you is.

Alternatively if you don't want to find out their best deals & definitely want to move away, drop them an email & ask them what day you have to call up to cancel the service (remember you need to give 30 days notice)

Just phoned them up and have the same deal for £32 now which is the XL package and Large BB so very pleased with that.

Also asked for the V+ box which is on offer at moment for £75

Forgot to ask I've added the V+ box because it is on offer but is it any good? I wouldn't want to pay £150 so £75 seems like good value for something that will help us record Corrie for my wife and me to watch something else.
