    "they" who are "they"

its my experience that those with no recourse to public funds are simply turned away. I used to have to tell pregnant women, elderly people, people with disabilities- sorry if you have no recourse then theres nothing I can do. No housing, no vouchers for food, no nothing. In fact, the government was telling us at the time that Child Protection was classed as a service () and that families with no recourse could not "benefit" from this "service" - ie if you know a child is being abused or neglected, then leave them alone until you see that letter from LUnar House. This was the final straw for me in that job.

Some of my older disabled clients used to sleep on londons night bus network.
Some charities set up homestays, so general members of the population would offer thier spare rooms for no fee to those less fortunate
street homelessness agencies are struggling ( was on the news the other day) to engage with so many street homeless people due to the variety of languages that they speak
some are lucky enough to live with freinds/ family/sofa surf
some charities will pay hostel rates on behalf of those who have no recourse.
a couple of charity projects I know of will provide some shelter to those who have been trafficked with a view to trying to support them in the short term until they can go home/ granted asylum.
There was a programme on the BBC not so long ago that in manchester there are families and single people from all over the world squatting in derelict warehouses
    and shops.
Im sure NDG will be able to add to this, as she currently works in the field.

I personally think this is a national disgrace. The things some of these people have experienced & seen - gave ME nightmares and I was only hearing it 2nd hand . I have seen the physical scars. I have heard the recollections and i have cried with them as they tell thier story of thier villages being firebombed and thier babies raped. but as long as no one gets in front of "us" in the queue eh!

Not being offensive.. They= autorities, people responsable.

Maybe if this government didn't give all the council houses to asylum seekers and immigrants there'd be a lot more available for those GENUINELY in need!!!

Have to agree, the Neo-Trots might not tho, but they are rarely the ones struggling to put a roof over there Heads, after over a decade in power its harder to get social housing under a Labour Government that it was under the Tories !!... This Government have betrayed there traditonal supporters on this Issue ...

NASS provides housing, in the form of bed and breakfast, hostels or community housing. its paid for by central government via NASS, its not council housing, its private housing

Thanks for the straight answer, so it is public funded but not direct.

A lot of peoples attitudes are going to change when they get repo'd and forced to beg for a housing estate flat surrounded by "16 year old chavs with 3 kids" (quote from above)
Only to be told thay are not a priority as it was their own fault for loosing there house!

i think the problem is ad is that as house prices become cheaper BTL landlords will snap them up for rent

what we actually need is a lot more HA homes so that people on low incomes rent from HA's (as their cheaper) instead of letting of BTL landlords

therefore we need to build a lot more homes

this way BTL landlords calcs wouldn't work out

You know a few months ago I would have agreed here, however don't be fooled that there are an army of BTL landlords waiting in the wings to snap up cheaper property, my opinion is there isn't

Don't get me wrong there are a few, in fact there are one or two on this very board who may have the cash in the bank to stump up the necessary funds to do this but and it is a big but, this will be on a much much smaller scale than has been apparent in the last few years.

There seem to be a huge number of landlords who bought into the hype of the past few years, many who had never known what the word yield meant, just the words 'property only ever goes up', these people are going to go bust, there will be many who get out by the skin of their teeth and never touch it again.

The point is BTL is dead, on the scale we have seen over the last few years.
