Well, an update on the mystery.
Last night I was wakened by a very loud rustling coming from directly underneath our bed. Whatever was under there sounded big and I was basically terrified!
I woke the OH to deal with it (of course). Luckily it seemed to be coming from a suitcase of Christmas presents so we gingerly eased this out and zipped it up fast. Whatever it was in there was moving around, so we realised, thank goodness, that it had gone into a ready made trap.
The OH took it down the end of the garden, unzipped the case then carefully took everything out until there was only a tube of wrapping paper left. He looked inside and there looking out at him was a mouse!
He shook this out into the garden. (He also filmed all this by the way?!!)
No doubt it's made its way back to the house and we'll have to get some traps.
    Thanks for all your replies.

Lol, would have liked to have seen your hubby walking up the garden, suitcase in his hand in the dead of night. Any neighbour catching sight of him would image you'd pushed him out after a tiff & he was off to camp in the garden shed 'til all was forgiven. :)

What a lovely little ending with the mouse popping out of the tube & scurrying off into the night.

Hope he has no brothers or sisters living in the house, but if you are buying some traps they won't be around for long.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

    Hi conradmum

Loved your story but here is a cautionary tale for you and anyone else who thinks they may have mice. We recently awoke on a Sunday morning to find water dripping through the kitchen ceiling.

After many phone calls (our regular plumber couldn't help) we managed to get a local plumber to check it out.

Ended up having to dismantle the loo and take up the bathroom floor. The 'L' joint on the mains water supply to the cistern had been gnawed by a mouse (we could see the teeth marks !) and it had made a pin size hole through which water was escaping.

Thankfully it was soon fixed but could have been a lot worse. The plumber told us that mice are known to have chewed through electrical cables as well. So for anyone who can't bring themselves to kill an innocent animal - think about the damage it might be doing to your home (and your wallet).

We had a mouse in our bedroom once, heard the noise and it woke us up, was really spooky. We spent the rest of the night - about 5 hours believe it or not trying to catch this blooming mouse, it would run behind the wardrobe, behind the chest of drawers etc. We were spraying deodorant down the back of places to try to flush it out, standing on the bed, trying to poke it out with a stick husband got from the garage. Eventually caught it in a bin when it ran out from the back of something and we were very good and released it back into the fields. Not a night we would like to repeat!
  • We had starlings one year which was a pain. Neighbour had squirrels that ate loads of his roofing felt from the inside. We had mice a couple of years ago and they ate all the labels of the bottles of wine we had stored up there in boxes! Sorry to say that the old fashioned traps with a bit of cheese sorted it out for us.

Rabbits? Are your carrots dissappearing into the ground as you gaze out of the window? :D
