Do you know what's living in my loft (merged threads)

We can hear loud scrabbling around at night. It's usually around ten o'clock or so but it could happen later too without our hearing it. Does anyone know what it's likely to be, or of any signs we can look out for without having to actually go up there and have a good poke around? If it's bats we wouldn't want to disturb them.

when it happened to us it was a nest full of baby birds, one got behind my bath panel must of fell down another was in the hanging basket another on the landing and when we went up in the loft there was a dead one in one of the boxes.

If it's bats you'll be prosecuted if you disturb them.
Sorry, but the best way to find out what's up there is to go up there. If bats are there they'll be roosting during the day and you'll seem them. Have a look round for signs of droppings, disturbance etc and entrance/exit site. I'm sure others will have some advice on this.0 -
Contact your local council and get the pest control officer to come round. It's probably mice and the pest control officer will deal with them.
Dora is correct about bats. They are a protected species and you mustn't disturb them. However, I think it's unlikely that you'd hear bats scrabbling about. If it is bats, they'd be in hibernation mode until the spring.;)
So..........I think it's probably a mouse or mice.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -
Probably birds or mice. I used to hear them galloping across my bedroom ceiling but my Dad would never believe me.
JulesThe ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0 -
When we had this, it was mice. We set a humane trap and ended up catching three.
Haven't had a problem since next door got themselves a cat.0 -

If it is only a period in the evening my bet would be birds. Usually with birds the noise tends to come from the eaves. If the scurrying is all over the ceiling then its mice. Mice tend to go on and off all through the night in my experience. We get both every year. Old house, impossible to stop them. Drives the cat mad.
No good going to the local council here. They closed there pest control and put it out to contractors. I think it would be best to do something yourself. Either mousetraps (the humane ones we tried never caught anything - what make was yours Bossyboots? I'd like to give it a try) or earplugs.0 -
