Sainsburys training

Options
I am starting at Sainsburys next week as a Display Assistant/Merchandising Controller, which is a full time and perm position (the job has been referred by both titles) and have induction training Mon-Fri during the evening. From glancing at forums, most induction training is only for a couple of days from 9-5. I couldn't tell you from reading the blogs etc if they were full or part time.

Also my role is paid at the same rate as a team leader. Does anyone have any clue as to what my training will entail?

The main role is when a brand new store is opening or a store in the region has a refurb or been extended, I am part of the regional display team to help with the store layout. When I am not needed on the road, I will be working in my store and doing whatever needs required - till work, checking dates, filling shelves etc.

My retail work has been working at a small paper shop and as a cashier at a bank.

i did a bit of work as part of a regional display team, good fun, the training from what i remember would be watching some videos eg health and safety, you might be given some workbooks to fill out but it shouldnt be too hard and the trainer may give you the answers

Is this the training where they tell you to say "This is a Colleague announcement" rather than Staff announcement?
    .....

  • Hi! When I joined JS many moons ago...20 to be exact our training took 3 months!! luckily those days have long gone.
Initially you will train how to lift, stack an "L-shape", roll pallets should be pushed not pulled, fire safety and assembly points, customer care,Take customer to product not tell them:rolleyes: (have a story about that!)
Most staff are now required to be till trained and you will need to be trained in handsets-RF guns and SELs (shelf edge labels-widths,capacities)in house computer programmes to print off tickets and to get off your NDI's (not dressed ins)new lines and discontinued lines, You will be taught how to follow a planagram which is how the product in a section should be layed out and what goes where.
Christmas Lines will be coming in all the time and it will be your job to get them on the shelf following the correct layout.....
All this will be done whilst shadowing an experienced CDA so don't be scared or intimidated.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience learning and doing this job designing and filling an empty section was quite rewarding actually.
Congratulations on landing such a fab job as these jobs are usually snapped up by internal staff so rarely get advertised outside of the company.:T
Hope i have put your mind at rest and not worried you too much :o if you want any more info or don't understand anything I have abbreviated please just ask.
    Kind Regards

    OP

You will regulary have think 21 training which is 15 or so questions which are easy, you get paid on the friday of the 4th week eg we got paid 7th/11 and the next pay day is 5th/12

I questioned this ludicrous announcement used at Selsdon and Warlingham branches and on each occasion the lady in customer care replied that "it sounds nicer".

This sounds like USAian style brainwashing to me. Both ladies seemed very uncomfortable when I questioned the use of "Colleague Announcment".

    Absolutely mad!!!:T

To which the obvious response is "No it doesn't"
    .....

  • I worked for a large supermarket chain for 9 years, from shelf stacker up to management. As far as I'm concerned these organisations suck the soul from you and it's no wonder they have such horrendous staff turnover. In relation to your query re training,,,these places always promise the world and just don't deliver. As a merchandiser you will get mucked about no end and be shunted from pillar to post, have to change from day to night shift at the drop of a hat, work ridiculous amounts of unpaid overtime, rarely get a weekend off etc etc. Sorry to sound so negative but give it a couple of years and you'll know exactly what i mean. Good luck,,,,you'll need it

Well to me it just seems a bit over the top that you are expected to toe the corporate line for such trivial things. Someone somewhere in a meeting said "I've got an idea, let's say colleague instead of staff announcement and watch the sales go through the roof".

    Plus it sounds wrong.
