Asset Collection company chasing debt from peson who doesnt live in our rented house

We have been in our property for approx. 3 months, and have been receiving letters for people who we presume lived here before.

As requested by the landlord, we have been sending them back saying 'not at this address'.

One came today and I could see under the front window that it ws from a Asset Collection company. I opened the letter to investigate.

Its for someone who doesnt live here, and as the house was renovated by the landlord before we rented it, i doubt it was someone who hasnt lived here for a while.

Do we keep on sending the letters back saying not at this address, or contact these people to notify them?

Is this something to let the landlord know about?

We are currently debt free and dont want any black marks against our names or risk us bad credit in the future when we may look for a mortgage.

The company is Asset Collection & Investigation Ltd.

Advice please?

Many thanks

M

Either return to sender or bin them. It's not your debt, and you won't get black marks. You may find, though, that the credit rating of your address is reduced, but nothing you can do about that. The debt collectors won't believe the RTS letters anyway.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

just received another letter for this person who doesnt live here.

told the postie that she didnt live here and asked should i just put "not at this address on it". his advices was that it probably wouldnt go back to the sender anyway and said i might as well throw it away.

I opened the letter, and it was from a solicitors, chasing £100 from this said person who doesnt live here on behalf of argos.

Do you think i should just call the solicitor and say that the person doesnt live here and they are unknown to us?

Should i just ignore it? If i do ignore it, what would happen to us?

Should i get the landlord involved?....dont really want to hassle them as they are pretty good.

    advise would be useful!
  • happened to me with my house, I opened the letters, rung the numbers and explained the situation. I did know the address the last tenants moved to, but was unsure if they were still there. The debt collecting agencies were fine about it and I didnt hear anything else from them.

there were around half a dozen agencies chasing various debts and not once did it cause me any problems.

I did try the 'not at this address, return to sender' on some of the letters, but found they just got re-delivered to the house about 6 weeks later!!

any debts incurred by others at your address will not affect your own credit worthiness. bin the letters and forget about them.

No point involving the landlord. Personally i would call the debt agency just to stop the letters being sent.

Be warned, it's an offence to open post that is not addressed to you. How would you feel if it was your post at a previous address!

We received a new car registration for somebody who had not lived at our address for two years. We then received correspondence from the company he had just bought the car from.

We went to the police and reported it and got a crime number. The police opened the letters for us and photocopied the contents. They then made a note against the registration to stop the car and force the driver to update his details as he hadn't changed his driving licence either.

We then wrote to the DVLA and the car company quoting the crime number and returning their letters. Unsurprisingly the letters stopped although we did get a free sample golf magazine some months later; it went straight in the recycling.

I would keep returning the letters. If you have access to labels and a colour printer then I would print out some stickers with red or orange borders that you can stick on them and put them straight back in the post. It will be quicker for you! If you know where the person now is (check the electoral roll for example) then you can always forward them!

If there's no return address on the outside of the envelope, can I/we justifiably open the letter to find a return address? Or should that be left to the PO?

Get a pen and write on the envelope

"Not at this address" and stick it back in the post
