Home broadband speeds sooo slow

Hi All,

I'm after some advice on how I can get to the bottom of why my home internet is sooo slow.

I'm with BT who tell me I can receive up to a 2MB service where I live, and this is the tariff I'm on... And paying for I might add.

However, I experience extremely slow speeds - I've just done a speed test at speedtest.net and it shos I have 232kbps download speed and 238kbps upload speed.

his surely can't be right, I've tried doing different things like plugging the router into the main BT hub in the house & trying to make the connection wired instead of wireless but the speeds are coming out around about the same each time!!

Where should I start to try to get this issue resolved?

Many thanks

You should try connecting the router to the BT test socket, by taking the plate off of the master socket and connecting to the socket inside, assuming you have an NTE5 master socket.

That will give you an idea of your best possible speeds - and of course try it at different times of the day as well.

  • Thanks guys.

My master socket doesn't have the small faceplace, but only the whoe front plastic piece comes off.

I've taken this off & behind, there is just wiring and there appears to be no other socket...

Any ideas on this & also, how can I identify my sync rate?

    Thanks
  • Thanks for this. I've logged into the router but cannot see anything that relates to "sync" rates.

Is there a certain area I should be looking - Ive found the statistics relating to upload & download speeds but no "sync" rate
  • Perfect, I've got that - DownStream Connection Speed 288 kbps UpStream Connection Speed 288 kbpsThe router is Netgear DG834GT.

    Does this help?
  • D'OH - So all in all, pretty much nothing I can do? (Shy of moving house :) )

Thanks for your time with this!
  • what's the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and downstream attenuation (ATTN), as reported by the modem? ALso, to add to your jobs, run a bt speedtest and report the results. you are possibly on a very long line, but the 834GT is a good long line modem, and it may be possible to tweak a little more out of it using custom firmware or DMT tool, if you feel confident and competent enough to try :)

  • I'll give the bell wire a go. I'm just over 500m from exchange
  • when connected to the main BT socket do you still have the dire sync speed? 500m from the exchange should give you almost full sync, unless the cable goes round the houses to get to you.

  • I've got some further info from my router:

Line Attenuation Downstream: 33.0 db Upstream: 21.0 db
Noise Margin Downstream: 28.6 db Upstream: 29.0 db
As i say I'm just over 500m from the Exchange - I'd rather not customise the router if the connection speed will be minimal - however the bell wire seems to be a good approach - wouls you agree Tony?

    Thanks
