besy way to pay for car on ebay?

Hi guys, quick question. We have just bought a mini bus from ebay. We would really appreciate advice on the best method of payment. Seller doesn't do paypal. He is a business seller and hubby is going to view/collect next week. I'm bit concerned about him travelling up with lots of cash on him.
All advice much appreciated:D

Don't think sellers can refuse paypal anymore. Definitely the safest route ;)
  • wow, thanks for quick reply tinkerbell. The seller said he will accept bankers draft or cash. Not sure what a bankers draft is?

A bank draft is a cheque drawn on the bank. It will cost you to get it..(depending on what bank account you have though). A stop can't be put on a draft like a normal cheque can.
  • Cash, BACS transfer (transfers between Barclays or HSBC are instant) or Bankers Draft.

Paypal would take a killing on fees.

I have bought a couple of cars of ebay .
The seller won't want paypal as he will pay quite a lot for this service. And unless you have instant payments set up you will have to wait until it is cleared and in his bank before you can have the item.
As long as the paperwork is in order. You have the sellers name already so the log book should confirm this information.I can't see it as any different to buying a car from auto trader or the news paper. In fact you have more evidence of a legitimate sale .
I paid cash for both cars .One was a lexus for just under £8000 .
Arrange for someone to go with you if you feel the need .You may need someone to drive your old car home.
It does depend how many items the seller has to his name and also if your item stands head and shoulders in value above all the other sold items .
Ebay also do a credit check that you can have done for a small amount (about a fiver)
  • Thanks Novagirl, any ideas on approx cost of getting bankers draft? Maybe I'm just being over cautious but worry about him travelling with few thousand pounds in his pocket!

I think it's £10 at Barclays - I guess it depends bank to bank though?

  • Get your hubby to arrange to withdraw the money up from a branch near the seller.

Cars and motors are exempt from the requirement to take paypal.
