    os = old style.

    They do batch cooking and cooking from scratch - stuff that you may be able to do at weekends to prepare for the coming week more cheaply.

    I've looked up a big youth hostel near to where I work: £17.50 per night Mon, Tues & Wed, Thurs is £22.50 = £75, plus say, £10 coach travel both to and from London on the Mon morning and Friday evening = £85.

    £116 (season ticket) - £85 rent/travel = £31.

    £31 divided into say 5 days for food = £6.20 to include lunch and tea.

    This means I break even?!

    Quality of life may be better, and it would be potentially easier to get other part time work in London? Sometimes you can sit and try to work these things out but ot just does your head in. Give it a go for a couple of nights, but do remember it will feel unfamiliar and maybe a bit lonely to start with.

    Wherabouts do you live? Can you get a train into say Zone 3 or 4, if possible, then buy a travelcard for those zones for the week/month? Because it will cost less on the train then.

    Hi All,

    I've just made a call to British Rail: A 6 month season ticket would cost me £2,688.80.

    I do not own a laptop, which would be really helpful for me. I have yet to figure out the 6 month calculations, although I'll give the 2 nights in London some very serious thought: I may even be able to combine this with another p/t job in London, as previously suggested.

    Just had a thought - this may be completely not your cup of tea, but when my gran got elderly and frail she used to have carers staying overnight. She didn't need a lot of help (just when she needed to get out of bed for the loo). If that was something you'd consider, it might be a way of getting a bed to sleep in rather than go home. But it wouldn't suit everyone, so I'm just mentioning it as an option!

    This is rather interesting: 1 x 6 month season ticket @ £2,688.60 costs only 40p more than 6 x 1 monthly season tickets @ £448.20. ??!

    I'm going from Southampton. I've looked at going to East Croydon (£13.45 so the website says...), and then from here, to central London, but even with an Oyster card (capped at £4.80), it still works out overall at approx. £20! Actually, £18.25 to be precise, although I haven't worked out how exactly to get from E.Croydon to central London, and the train / connection times.

    £745 - £448 = £297

    Can you really not find a job closer that pays more than £297/month?

    Not in my line of work (i.e. career) unfortunately, and the work available where I live tends to be pretty low level and 'non-progressive' - despite registering also with agencies etc. Yes, it really is that bleak.
