Network file sharing problem part 2.

I thought I'd start a new thread because most of the things in the first thread have been resolved now.
The one remaining problem is that the ADSL/router is showing the main computer as blocked when I look in the DHCP list. So I assume that there is some setting on the main computer that means that the router views it as blocked. I can't seem to uncheck the blocked status of the computer.
From either machine I can ping the router and the router will happily ping both machines. However, I can't ping from one machine to the other.
I have a plan - remove the USB connection between the main computer and the router and then put the ethernet link in its place.
Both machines rune Zone Alarm with the hardware IP addresses in the trusted list. Windows firewall off.

Internet Connection Sharing. This however was a while back so im
not sure if this still applies, just a thought only.0 -
It all works!
I found that the Ethernet driver on main computer was lacking driver, so I let it automatically search for one on the internet via the USB connection. Then I ran the router from ethernet link, rebooted, reran network setup wizard etc, then rebooted again. The DHCP list is now shoing the main computer twice, the new version isn't blocked, I've just got both machines to ping each other.
Only one major question now: how can I clear the DHCP list out so all the old crap is removed?
I spoke too soon. Back to the very 1st problem now. Main computer can read and write files to my computer. My computer is refused access to the main computer even though I can ping it. It says that the admin for the main computer needs to allow me access to it.Happy chappy0 -

Correct!

"ZoneAlarm Plus and ZoneAlarm Pro fully support Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ZoneAlarm does not fully support ICS."
Plus and Pro cost money I'm afraid.
How ever, Microsoft have this KB article:

Cheers matty, I thought I saw this a while back but wasnt too sure, :beer:0 -
So are you saying that Zone Alarm is preventing me from file sharing to the machine?
LOL at the windows troubleshooter BTW:the computer I want to connect to isn't available; I'll work with my network administrator to solve the problem.
I've just read the useful link (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302951), so their solution is to just remove zone alarm then.
The funny thing is that file sharing does work from the main machine to my machine, even though I am running zone alarm free on mine too.
Is it worth applying that fix and then installing the latest free edition of zone alarm?
I've read the links and I understand broadly what they are saying, but it's still not really clear why it's preventing file sharing but allowing internet sharing. Or do I not have internet sharing because the router sorts that out? Each machine is just connected to a router and it's data from my machine to the main machine that is being rejected when I try to file share.
According to windows help:
I have a residential gateway (ADSL modem + router), so I'm not using ICS as far as I understand it.You should not use this feature in a network with other domain controllers, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured for static IP.
I'll go and turn Zone Alarm off and see what happens.
I can't find Windows Setup tab.a. On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
b. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
c. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click the Windows Setup tab.
d. In the Components list, click Internet Tools, and then click Details.
e. In the Components list, click to clear the Internet Connection Sharing check box, click OK, and then click Apply.Happy chappy0 -
I don't think Internet Connection Sharing applies when going through the router because the connection goes through the router, not pc-to-pc. E.g. When you access the other PC, it goes to your router and then back to the other computer, not straight to the other computer, as it would if you didn't have a computer. tigermatt

UPDATE: 17 Dec 2005 The router does sort out the connection sharing, as your ADSL will go into your broadband modem (usually built into router) then to the router and out to the PCs. You just need to make sure that you have stopped IE dialling a connection - Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Never dial a Connection, OK.0 -
On my computer, it is called the Add/Remove Windows Components button, and it is on the left hand side of the Add/Remove Programs dialog box. I can't seem to find "Internet Tools" in the Component List though.tomstickland wrote:

Yes, that's where I looked.
I think internet sharing is not happening on my system anyway.
I've just tried file sharing on the 3rd machine, a wireless laptop.
That doesn't work either.Happy chappy0
