Thinking about all those Christmas presents that need AA and AAA batteries.
Any ideas on where to get good batteries at good prices ?

the larger poundlands are doing 4 aa rechargeables for a quid (obv), and in most independent pound shops you can get packs of say ,50 batteries for a pound or even less sometimes. they might now last that long but cheap for you if you are giving them away with presents.Fr. Hi there,
This may be too technical an answer for some but the trick is to look for the mAh (milliamps*hours) number. Usually on the good batteries this is around 2000. (This will power an LED light for 200hrs!!!). So take this number and divide by the cost and pick the highest number ie you want the most mAh per pound spent thus representing maximum value.
Last time I purchased some batteries I got some by VARTA (incidently they came out top on a battery test on the big breakfast years ago when they did a drumming bunny test with a load of different battery types!). Don't ignore Duracell BogOffs either as these can turn out very good value for money as well.
Basically the mAh number will tell you how much energy the battery will give you.
Hope this does not confuse you all!!!

As for recycling ....
Zinc Air ones you can throw in the bin.
The others with the heavy metals (alkalli ones) save up an ice cream tub of them and take them to the local tip (they should have a battery recycle box thingy) or try your recycle centre (the one with the bottles and shoes!!!). Failing that mail them to your local councillor or MP. Dumping a few hundred toxic batteries on his/her desk should at least start a few questions being asked in the right places!!!
Regards
Jules
PS My local authority don't collect them and I suspect nobody in the UK does either. Saw in the news today that I think Belgium are the only ones who take recycling of the batteries seriously!!!Grocery Challenge 2008
