    I've been Money Tipped!
    :D
Oh god, I'm appalled now. It was a joke.
I feel dirty now for asking!

I couldn't accept your generous offer. Clothes don't suit me anyway and er .. *blushes* .. boy, it's hard back tracking!

I'll think about it. But I'd send you some pics of me if I do pluck up the courage to accept freebies from strangers, which makes me feel awkward.

PASTURESNEW , really, don't back track, fc123 is bing lovely because she likes you! She has it within her power to do a nice thing for you:rolleyes: :D . Send her the pictures and size, be grateful and pleased that you are so well thought of! And don't call her strange :p I would have sent you a card but I thought about it and I wouldn't trust me with your address ;)

There seems to be an underlying idea festering underneath this thread which I'd like to ask about.

Does not buying a house make me a second-class citizen? It seems as if a lot of people on here think that you can't begin to live life properly unless you've got a mortgage.

Surely, renting doesn't mean 'putting your life on hold'. Lots of people rent and raise happy and healthy children all over the world! And they have pets!

(Personally, I don't think having children is actually the acme of human endeavour, but that's another issue.)

So, to recap, racism is unacceptable, sexism is unacceptable...but somehow rentism (or whatever you want to call it) is still ok.

In my world view council house/Housing Association tenants and home owners are in the same group.

Private renters are in the other group when they're at a certain point in their lives.

If you are in council/HA or own your own home, you know that so long as you keep making the payments, whether that is mortgage or rent, you can really feel you belong there. It's yours.

While private renting, there's always the idea at the back of your mind that somebody else calls the shots and at some random future point they can just say "no more, bye".

It's nice to have a home that you can buy things for that all match and fit. Things only fit and match in one/one sort of house. If you're in control of that space you can achieve this level of matching cosiness better. If you're forever lugging your stuff about to different houses, stuff just ends up not feeling quite right. It no longer fits. It's all a bit "make do and mend" because you bought something for one place/corner/colour/layout and now it's all different because somebody changed their mind about you staying in that place.

    My odd tuppence-worth.

I wish I had done that with ours but we were both English speaking, so didn't apply.
I was Welsh /English when small but the Welsh got wiped out when we moved...I learnt it at school, so not from parents.
But I have bi-lingual Russian / English nephew and niece (1 + 3) fascinating esp as my bro (the dad) hardly speaks any Russian at all.

I am an English speaker, really, that's it. I did German for 3 years, got a GCSE, and can speak almost nothing now. I did learn some Polish when I was teaching there for a year, and that's stuck better, but the reading / writing is pretty much blank for me.

I don't speak that much Hebrew, sadly, although I'm trying. And they can keep their damn alphabet with no vowels and written from right to left....

OH was born in Israel, and at home his Dad (bi-lingual from birth in English / French, learned Hebrew as a young adult) spoke to him in English, and his mother in Hebrew (her only language). Once they moved to the UK, they only spoke Hebrew at home, and OH translated for his mother until she learned English.

OH only speaks to Isaac in Hebrew, and has done since he was born. We also have pretty much only Hebrew DVDs and tapes, very few English ones.

  • I don't think its a biggy either way ;) Makes sense for us with family linguistics, but I wish we had a more universal second/third language. Would be fun to go for something widely spoken in new makets, like Urdu, Farsi or Arabic, but unfortunatly beyond our capabilty and perhaps not so useful in our family.;) DH remembers no Hebrew at all (ok first line of what he had to say at Bar Mitzvah:rolleyes: ) but you are going to find someone in most of the world (ok, excluding Islamic regimes). lol.

Well, we had to stick with our raw material (-:

Besides, it's important to OH that Isaac speaks Hebrew. Apart from me, Isaac, and his brother, OH's family is not in the UK. Mostly in Israel, some in America and Australia.
