Family holiday in Australia (complicated!)

Hi, My DH and I need to go to Australia next year to visit my FIL. We hope to go in June/July next yr. My DD will be 2.75 yrs and I am due to have a baby in Feb, so if everything goes OK our baby would be 4 months/5months old.

Now, I have 2 questions, should we book now to save cash even though our baby isn't here yet and it feels wrong (silly I know, feels like tempting fate). I'm pretty sure that prices will only rise between now and then (when we went 3 yrs ago we definitely booked before xmas to travel at a similar time).

So my other question would be if we book now is there any kind of super travel insurance we could get just in case me or our baby has complications and I wouldn't want to travel?

Also we are flying to Perth and Emirates have the cheapest fares ATM, does anyone think flying this way (stop in Dubai so 2 x 10.5 hr flights) would be harder on the kids than the usual singapore/HK/KL route?

Thanks for reading!

Thanks, it took me about 5 years to realise what lol stood for!

In response to your questions then yes i would certainly book your flights, going by your thinking you wouldnt buy baby clothes, or cots or baths etc. If money was no problem you probably wouldnt be here so i would certainly do the common sense thing and book now.

In regards to insurance i doubt it, since when booking travel insurance you have to name people to be covered. Id be stunned if you could find an insurance sompany who would insure you due to complications etc.

On a a more serious note i would look forward to the birth of your child and book your holiday without fear of something going wrong. You can be too careful in my opinion. Whatever you choose to do i hope your birth does go without complications, you have a beautiful child and an amazing holiday.

I think insurance covers for "can't" travel, not "don't want" to travel.

Good point, I should have said 'can't'. I have never claimed on insurance so I don't really know what is covered. For example I could see a refund being no problem for surgery but what if it was a chronic condition? I don't really know how it works, do you get a doctor to say that you aren't fit to fly?

Phone the airline direct and ask them to book the infant at the same time as you guys and say it will be infant jones but not sure of first name yet they should do it for you and I would defo book asap!! things look like getting more expensive especially for peak period like summer hols!!
As for the emirates they are fab and youwill be 24 hours or there abouts whichever way you go!
Maybe stop the night in Dubai if you are worried??
    Enjoy

Most insurances will cover you for cancellation for death/illness(not specifically chronic) of a close relative - Your baby would be classed as a close relative, therfore you should be covered (even though the child is not named on the insurance iyswim)

We had the same issues in booking our summer holiday this year... just felt strange. But both companies just put baby 'bloggs' on the booking and advised to call and update name after the birth. This was done with no issues

Cant advise about the long trip duration - our flight was only 4 hours and she slept most of the journey both ways

  • Some airlines don't allow bookings for infants in advance of being born, however will happily add to a booking when they make their appearance (I know this is how BA works). I'd just call up and check their policy.
  • Thanks all we will prob book, but also call the airline to check the conditions for booking our baby.
