We flew to the Dominican Republic last June with Thomas Cook. Outbound the comfort factor was not too bad but coming home was a different story. It was an Airbus with the toilets down some spiral stairs and the whole of the deck was then filled with seats. There was no leg room or even face room! There was nowhere to stand to stretch your legs for a few minutes. It was horrendous. The seat in front of me seemed to be faulty as it would not go completely upright at any time and the considerate(!) passenger in front reclined it back as far as it would go. When the meal was served, the steward asked him to put it up while we ate. He did this but as soon as he had finished, he whacked the seat back. I had not finished and I was lucky not to get my red wine all down me. I complained loudly and he did have the grace to apologise and lift the seat back. However, the second the food was cleared away, down came the seat.

I spent a truly miserable 9 hours and it has put me off using Thomas Cook in the future.

What does losing three inches at face height matter? Doesn't impact on your leg space or impinge on the space you are occupying. Just makes for a slightly more comfortable position on long or night flights.
It makes a huge difference to the amount of space available to eat, or use the tray for anything else (like putting your drink on it), or as Becles says if you have a toddler to man-handle.
