I've seen a few of these demos, mainly in Debenhams. The free knife does come at the end (It's usually been a small paring knife) I have 2 and they are quite good. They do only give them to adults - I expect the over 21 rule is to cover them for giving knives to older looking youngsters.

So I went and watched and thought it was interesting, but they refused to give me one as I couldnt prove I was over 21 (was 20). Apparently the free gifts are only for 21 and over, but he couldnt tell me why?

It's the policy of the knife company, regardless of any laws enabling 18 year olds to purchase knives. The knife company have chosen to require recipitents to be 21.

Yeah that would be poor publicity for Tescos... "Tesco employee threatened with free Knife" Crikey!

If someone wants to threaten Tesco staff with a knife they don't need to wait in line for a free knife, Tesco provide racks full of much bigger knives in the kitchen stuff isle.

Perhaps they should keep all knives behind the counter, and may be anything else that could be used to threaten staff. Cucumbers, tins of beans, wet fish ...

But this demostration wasnt a knife!! It was some other random object!
    Green and White Barmy Army!
  • Sounds like the member of staff making the tannoy announcement might have just got muddled up? I ended up buying one of the knife sets after being intrigued by the announcement of a free 'Magic Spiral'...a free knife was never mentioned until the actual demonstration (buy one of the 'World's Sharpest Knives' and get two free, plus two paring knives, a flexible filleting knife, two 'world's smallest juicers' and the promised Magic Spiral, which is a fancy garnish maker). I needed a set of kitchen knives anyway...not normally an extavagant impulse buyer! They're actually pretty good quality for the price (£23 the lot)...and thinner veg slices = more portions from the same amount of veg = moneysaving! ;o)
  • I wasted most of my lunch hour listening to this demonstation in Tesco last week because I wanted my freebie! I didn't buy the knives but I was tempted because they said that had a lifetime guarantee and you could return them to Tesco for a free replacement forever! I'm sooo glad I didn't get them because the vegetable twirler thing was absolute rubbish - it went in the bin after about 30 seconds use and fustration because it didn't work. i can imagine how useless the knives were!
  • The vegetable 'twirler' - magic spiral to give it its proper name, works really well. The children love having their cucumber cut with it. I found it didn't work the once after pushing the spiral into the cucumber - I found that you need to twist it in. I have yet to try it on potato, but will soon! The demo I saw in Morrisons lasted for 10 mins max. I guess the woman could see we wouldn't be won over with salesman's talk!

You should write a letter to the Daily Mail complaining about how Tesco is fuelling our twisted knife culture by giving these weapons of death away... for free!

Use the free knife to 'shank' the demonstrator. That'll give the Daily Mail something to write about.
