I was asked by the PO counter clerk if I wanted to pay an extra £2 (totalling £6.60), to guarantee that it arrives next day. I did mention it being a Saturday, but she assured me that it would arrive next day as a result of the extra £2.
Another case of ill-informed Post Office staff! The surcharge is for items to be delivered on a Saturday, not for sending it on a Saturday, see Guaranteed Saturday Delivery. Time for a complaint to PO counters!

I sent the application via Special delivery at the standard charge and the print-out displays Monday 10th as Guaranteed Delivery Date.

I agree, but unfortunately the Royal Mail Website has a clause about Banks re Saturday Special Delivery here:

"Available for a small surcharge (£2 extra per item) from Post Offices throughout the UK. Mail an item on a Friday and we can guarantee next day delivery even though it’s a Saturday. Items sent to the following business types are excluded from the Saturday Guarantee: Banks, Building Societies, Travel Agents, Jewellers and Post Office Branches."

    Hope you were lucky anyway!

Thanks isofa, don't know whether the extra £2 helped or not, but have just checked the tracking and it confirmed that it was delivered this morning.

Sorry Dagobert, maybe I didn't explain myself very well. I posted it on Friday, and she said the £2 would guarantee next day delivery (it was then that I queried would that still apply as the next day was a Saturday).

Says will honour 7% for applications received by Monday, no mention of cheque clearing in this time, so hopefully okay???
I was told by Close Brothers they had to deposit your cheque on Monday 10th Nov 2008 at the latest so in effect you have to have the funds in yoyur bank by Wed 12th Nov 2008 to clear. The lady said any later was no good.

I called in to their office this morning and dropped off an application with the nice friendly security guard in the foyer. Sorry didn't look for a post box.

Thanks to this thread I have printed off the application form from the website, filled it in, written out cheque and am waiting for hubby to kindly deliver it to their offices on monday.

Went back to the site a short time after and saw that the 7% fixed rate application form was no longer available to download, but from tuesday 11th a 5.75% fixed rate bond will be available.

Just shows how useful these forums are.

Many thanks to the original poster.

I took my form in today and the girl who accepted it said she is working tomorrow as well. I had expected to just hand it in to security but they called someone down and she said that staff from all departments had been asked if they would work this weekend to cover the rush.
  • I just went to the website and found that the application forms had been taken down. However, I used google cached to find it here <ftp://server2.net-coms.co.uk/close/PG-Personal-Joint.pdf>. Can someone confirm that this is the same application form you filled in then others (like myself) can either hand deliver it or pay for same day delivery. Thanks

PS: If this link doesn't work I have saved a copy which Im happy to email to people (PM me)
  • Yep, that's the same form I posted on friday :T
    Maybe it's just me
  • Excellent - thanks
