Frozen arrow - help please.

When I turn on my computer the programs seem to load ok but my cursor arrow is frozen in the centre of the screen.
Being a computer neddy I turn the power off which shuts the computer down. Then when I turn back on the second time the programs seem to load and the arrow cursor moves around ok. This does not occur every time but most times.
But powering off I guess I could lose some files if it's still loading some stuff.
How can I cure my frozen arrow or get it to move without just turning the power off?
Do I need a new mouse or is it a program fault?

I'm using XP home on a Dell dimension 3000 with a plug in optical IBM mouse. Browser normally used is Firefox. AVG & Sunbelt personal firewall installed also Windows care defender.
Any other info required please just ask. ThanksYou don't stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing" Large print giveth - small print taketh away. "0 -

I haven't got another mouse. I'll go to pi$$y world and buy one. Then I'll report back
PS. The mouse does seem ok all day once the computer is active. The problem only seems to occur when turning onYou don't stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing" Large print giveth - small print taketh away. "0 -

Did you try unplugging the mouse and plugging it in again when the comp was still on to see if it un-froze it?
Also, instead of switching the machine off using the power switch, you could do it safely by using the "flying windows" key to bring up the start menu, the arrow keys to select "turn off computer"/"shut down" and hit "U" key to "turn off".Russia is HERE0
