Currys won't repair or replace faulty camcorder

I purchased a Sony Camcorder from Currys in Dec 07, which had a cash back offer from Sony requiring the original receipt to be sent to Sony. I posted off the cashback claim immediately and duly received the cashback cheque and paperwork back. A few weeks later I realised the battery was not holding the charge and looked for the receipt, whcih I could not find. It turned out Sony had sent me someone else's receipt for a totally different item. I contacted the store and was told they Camcorder could not be repaired without having the receipt. In September 08 I found a photocopy of the receipt which had got caught up inside some other papers, and took the camcorder to the store for repair. After approx 4 weeks it was returned to me, and it soon became clear had exactly the same problem as it had been sent away with. I phoned the Customer Service line and was told to take it back to the store, and ask if they would write it off as it was still faulty after 28 days. I did this and the Duty Manager refused to accept it as she "did not know if they would accept it back for repair or write off", and that as the customer service line was closed for the day she "could do nothing until Monday, but would have a word with them then and let me know what the outcome was". I asked if this meant that they were not going to either repair or replace it and her answer was "we will cross that bridge when we come to it"
It is now 2 weeks and I have heard nothing, I also registered a complaint on the web-site, but this too it seems is being ignored. Their code of conduct on the web site states that a complaint will be resolved withing 5 working days, but 7 workingdays on I am just getting stupid replies to my e-mails i.e. they have replied to my complaint - but the so called reply was just an e-mail asking for my address, which I replied to 7 working days ago.
Anyone else had anythgn like this happen?

They should have a record of your purchase. Anything with a guarantee bought at Currys or PC World requires you to give your name and address. Unless you refuse to give this, they should be able to look up any purchase you made while at your current or past postcodes.

You need "proof of purchase". This could be a bank statement, for example...
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
  • Hi there Susan perhaps I can help. Which Currys store did you buy the camcorder from ?

Nonsense, the entry on the statement would not say "Purchase: Currys - Sony Camcorder" it would say "Purchase: Currys" so the amount could be for anything
