Post #6 says "No i never took a meter reading". I've never rented but I would have thought if it was managed by estate agents they would have taken readings on takeover, i.e. 1st August.

If OP didn't take readings on moving in, I can't see how this can be disputed a month later.

i changed suplliers already. ok so if the estate agents have not taken any readings, i have an arguments do i have in my favour? what arguments do i have in my favour?
  • If you've changed supplier you've very little option. The old supplier are likely to want the debt sooner rather than later and because you are no longer their customer they'll probably treat you differently to existing customers.

The only real thing is to make sure the opening/closing reads for your change of supplier are accurate and the same and see what sort of arrangement the old supplier is happy to accept.

If you're responsible for the property from the 1st Aug you don't have any arguments if you can't validate the meter reading for Aug 1st.

if i call and ask what date were accurate reading taken and from that date make up a lower meter reading than estimated one, is that possible?

    What estimated one?

Presumably, there is an accurate reading from 1st August. You now have a bill dated 8th October - is that estimated?

So if you shouldn't pay the bills during that time who should?

As Rian is suggesting, you, as the tenant from 1st Aug, will almost certainly be responsible for paying the whole bill. You may, however, be able to claim some back from the agent or landlord if they will concede responsibility. You had the keys from 1st Aug.

At the end of the day, it was your responsibility to take meter readings and you didn't. Best thing to do is speak to letting agent but you must negotiate with the supplier and offer to repay the outstanding amount over a period of time.
