I never understand this logic... Next operate in a competitive market, they cannot merely add the cost on to prices, this would result in fewer sales. Charging for their catalogues adds to their profit. How many other businesses get away with this ? Its effectively charging people to enter your shop, and its disgraceful that people just lay down and accept it.
its about time Next were forced to cease this annoying practice, but until their customers tell them to stop it by cancelling the catalogue (as I have) they will continue to do it
Correct they are operating in a competitive market but £3.50 is peanuts compared to the production and distribution costs. I don't believe their clothes are any better than any other shop (including Primark) but then some people are willing to pay a lot of money for a label. I have seen somebody pay £40 for a £5 polo shirt simply because it had a particular label on it ... and I should know because at the time my job was to take ultra cheap polo shirts and get a team to sew the label on (you could buy exactly the same product, from the same box in the same consignment for £5 without a label or £40 with a label). If People are that stupid then £3.50 for a catalogue is nothing.

You can order any Directory item into the shop, though you do need to pay for it at the point of ordering. Takes about three days usually, If you phone them up they can check if it's arrived in the shop. The only time they can't do this is during the sale.
